For the tribals in the Siruvani forests area in Coimbatore, agriculture has always been the chief source of livelihood. But a novel initiative by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has given them new hope. When they are not working in their farms, residents of Chadivayilpathy, Kalkothipathy and Sarkaraporathy villages make furniture out of the stems of the invasive plant Lantana camara. The initiative not only protects the Western Ghats from the ecologically dangerous shrub, but also gives a fillip to the livelihood of local tribes.
