In a sixteen-hour major surgery at Amrita Instiute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi a youth who had lost both hands received limbs from a 24-year-old youth who died in an accident. This hand transplant surgery is understood to be the first of its kind in the country. 'As of now, only 110 hand transplants have been carried out in the entire world,' said Dr. Subramania Iyer, Head, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, AIMS, Kochi.
