A study by Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has shown that families that opt health insurance for children are very rare in Ernakulam. As per the study, of the 2,500 children detected with heart diseases every year in the district, just about 3.9% have medical insurance.

"In most cases the child will have congenital heart disease. There are few cases of rheumatic heart diseases too. The major hurdle is that most of the insurance companies in India don't cover congenital diseases," said Dr Krishna Kumar, head, department of Pediatric Cardiology, AIMS.
