Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) Circuit Design is the process of designing a large computer chip (more specifically, an integrated circuit, or IC), using computer-aided design (CAD) tools on a workstation or a personal computer (PC). The course demands learning the principles of VLSI design, designing and fabricating the stateof-the-art VLSI chips, understanding the complete design flow and expertise to design CMOS chips for industrial requirements. The curriculum focuses on employing hierarchical design methods and understanding the design issues at the various levels of hierarchy. Students are exposed to various design softwares in this programme. Also, they learn to design, simulate, implement and test complex digital systems using FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays).

The main objectives of this course are to analyze the electrical and design characteristics of transistors, gates and to study the issues and methodologies involved in the integration of these devices into complex high-performance systems.


The Department of Electronics andCommunication Engineering at Amrita School of Engineering, Amritapuri, has grown in the last 10 years achieving eminence in field of VLSI. The curriculum and syllabus are on par with IITs and leading International universities and are frequently updated to reflect the latest trends in the field. The department comprises of faculties having international standards and industrial exposure. Amrita alumni’s work in many of the renowned VLSI design groups of leading companies like Synopsys, Analog Devices, Intel, Broadcom Corporation, Wipro VLSI division , Open Silicon, HCL, IBM ,etc. Many faculty have come with several years of rich industrial experience in reputed companies and research organizations in India and abroad such as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (India), Maxlinear Inc.(USA), Broadcom Corporation (USA), Synopsys Inc.(USA), Texas Instruments(India, USA), GE Global Research Centre (USA), Cirrus Logic Inc. (USA) etc.

The programme aims to build a solid foundation of the fundamentals, the students are also exposed to emerging trends in the industry and are molded to be quality professionals of the future. The Department is also committed towards training of students in research and in the development of cutting edge technologies. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University is the only academic institution in India to have fabricated chips in IBM 32nm SOI process. This is on par with even some of the leading universities in the US.

The Department has a very strong team focusing on research based VLSI Design.

The VLSI Design lab

Primary focus of this lab is to provide state of the art computing platforms, hardware and software tools for ASIC and FPGA development.


  • 60 high performance computers with 8GB RAM, for individual use of MTech students,
  • throughout the duration of course.
  • Development platforms and EDA tools including latest releases of Cadence, Synopsys ASIC design Tools, Mentor Graphics toolset for HDL design & FPGA prototyping, XILINX FPGA kits , XILINX ISE & EDK platform tools and DSP kits from Texas Instruments etc.

R&D Laboratories

The department has two dedicated research labs in the areas of analog and Mixed VLSI Design, Health Care, Robotics, Human Aided Devices and Embedded Sensor Networks. Both the labs have produced commendable achievements in the frontiers of research.

  • AICSL (Amrita Integrated Circuits and Systems Lab)
  • AICSL is a research lab that focuses on cutting-edge research in the field of High Performance Analog and Mixed Signal Design in the latest technology nodes:
  • UMC (65-nm,90-nm,180-nm), and Global Foundries (55-nm).

The lab has collaborations with various prestigious industries as well as research agencies in the field such as Analog Devices Inc., Hypress Inc., Austria Micro Systems, and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
