Abstract:

Load fluctuations in a power system affect the otherwise constant frequency of the power system. Use of renewables and the associated power electronics device cause switching transients which modifies the power system frequency to a large extent. Wide use of non linear loads causes distortions which alters the frequency. Literature has numerous methods to measure frequency when the voltage/current signals are sinusoidal. With the advent of smart grid frequency measurement is essential for reliable operation of the grid and for data protection algorithms. In this paper, use of variational mode decomposition technique for frequency measurement in the presence of harmonics, transients and noise is explored. A comparison with the DFT based FIR algorithm for frequency measurement is also investigated. Simulations with test cases indicate a high accuracy rate for the method and a simple test bed using function generator to generate the varying frequencies and comparing the frequency with a specified value available in Lab VIEW is carried out. Performance of the algorithm with the integration of harmonics, transients and noise needs to be investigated. Further it is proposed to run an alternator at variable frequencies and evaluate the algorithm. © 2017 IEEE.
