This paper presents a lossy/lossless coding approach for medical images and textured data. The coding scheme is designed to suit a selective region growing method and the wavelet difference reduction method (Tian and Wells, 1996) is used to code the selected region. Zero tree concept is used to rearrange the wavelet coefficients after the singular value decomposition based texture classification in the wavelet domain is carried out. This coding approach significantly reduces the processing and transmission time of images such as MR images compared to the existing zero tree coding concepts. The simulation results show that the proposed method is much better in terms of PSNR values in all bit rates for medical images and textured data; hence it is also proposed for the 3D MR medical images to consider inter frame dependencies that require fast reconstruction and communication.
