Energy has a significant importance in elevating the lives of people all around the world. Students of Amrita have done field work in an empoverished village of the state of Bihar, and identified Energy as the most problematic problem area over there. Using the most advancing technologies, it was determined that a modernized smokeless Chulha, or smokeless stove, can be designed. It surpasses earlier such models, and can be of very low cost. It also can reduce the abundant requirement for biomass fuels. Also, advancing solar techniques are considered to support more sustainable electricity and its related services. Students were involved in developping new cookstove designs, based on the specific requirements of the villagers. They used Co-design method to come up with 3 prototype which were collaboratively developped with the village ladies.
