OBJECTIVES

  • Develop the novel type sensor node prototype, taking into account the design specifications of WP4 and the constraints and requirements coming from the scenarios/application (WP2) and the system development (WP3).

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

  • Feasibility: evaluate the feasibility of the sensor taking into account the functional and circuital specifications of the wireless node prototype from WP4. The activity will provide the performance targets achievable in cost, size (including antenna), power consumption and MTBF. [SCOM+INFO]
     
  • Power supply: analysis of low cost energy sources (both renewable and not) not relying on power distribution infrastructures. Energy scavenging technologies will be evaluated such as  study energy sources independent from wired plugs or very expensive technologies. Apart batteries, studies will be conducted to valuate power “refurbishment” technologies relying on renewable source of energy  as: (i) mechanical (electrical conversion to exploit the vibration energy. (ii) photovoltaic conversion to exploit natural or artificial source of light. [CEAL+EPFL].
     
  • Antennas: technologies for miniature antennas will be investigated taking into account constraints such as size, frequency band, radiation efficiency and propagation issues . [CEAL]
     
  • Design, implementation, integration and testing: the project of the node will comprise both HW and SW design. The HW project will cover RF design (radio front end) and digital design (control and data management and I/O). Both designs will be supported by the use of EDA/CAD tools and will converge to the implementation of the node HW prototypes (at least six units). The SW project will go through the usual phases of analysis, design, code implementation and debug, supported by development tools such as IDE and ICE both for emulation and debug.
     
  • HW/SW integration and testing will provide indications for design assessment and will produce a test report detailing the performance achieved and possible critical issues. [SCOM+INFO]
