• Indoor localization is a vital part of autonomous robots. Obtaining accurate indoor localization is difficult in challenging indoor environments where external infrastructures are unreliable and maps keep changing.

  • This project is a lecture browser system that helps users search a large corpus of lecture videos efficiently. This system helps the user to search the video both at the video level and segment level. A prototype system has been developed and has been hosted on our servers for testing.

  • The project Advancing Integrated Wireless Sensor Networks for Real-time Monitoring and Detection of Disasters is to develop a fully functional landslide monitoring and detection system using emerging wireless sensor network technology with enhanced geological DEPs at an active landslide site in the North - Eastern region of India. 

  • Attacks on information systems have grown exponentially in volume and in sophistication. While there are many security systems and ‘honeypots’ designed to harvest or trap the malware and study its behaviour, still it is very difficult to detect and identify the advanced malwares that are stealthy in nature and causing more serious damage. The traditional ‘honeypot’ systems that are traps set to detect attempts at unauthorised use of information systems, do not identify or do not have the capability to attract and detect advanced threats.

  • Liver function test is one of the commonly performed blood analyses. Colorimetric test for the estimation of liver enzymes and total proteins are well established. The objective of this project is to integrate all the colorimetric tests into a paper based micropad that requires very low sample volume. The fabrication of low-cost microfluidic devices based on paper are increasingly popular as they are inexpensive, simple to use, allow passive transport of fluids without active pumping and can easily take advantage of existing analytical techniques. Here a vertical flow design consisting of a filter capable of separating blood cells from plasma and a wax ink patterned on chromatographic paper with wells for each analyte has been designed. This design has advantages including small sample size, quick response, simple construction and less weight. Solutions of the reagents for the assays will be inkjet printed in the test zones and dried. Upon introduction of the sample, through capillary action the plasma (obtained after filtration) enters each well resulting in biochemical reaction and leads to color formation.

  • Amaran- A Robotic Coconut tree Climber- India got the tag as the second largest coconut producer in the world. Until recently coconut plucking job conventionally was taken up by socially and economically backward people in these areas. Due to various government welfare programs and increase in literacy, the number of people taking up this job has dwindled a lot which is one of the main reasons resulting in increase in the price of coconuts. 

  • The center facilitates a Collaborative Twinning Master’s Program in Automotive and Embedded Systems. Participants will be earning an MS degree in Embedded Systems from University at Buffalo and an M.Tech degree in Automotive Systems from Amrita University. The campus currently offers an M.Tech program in Automotive Engineering. Another M.Tech program on Automotive Systems with a focus on Automotive Embedded Systems is being planned.

It support the system architectures for remote equipment labs and addresses scheduling, networking, security and scalability.

  • Diabetes is a chronic disorder characterized by abnormal blood glucose levels due to problems associated with insulin production and action. When glucose levels rise too high, diabetes becomes dangerous. Without medical care, it can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke and in late stages can cause blindness, kidney failure and loss of limbs.

  • Researchers at the AmritaWNA in consultation with doctors at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) designed a low-cost, low-power wearable ECG-monitoring device called Amrita Spandanam, which is a wearable wireless ECG monitoring framework that utilizes mobile phones and web browsers for monitoring cardiac patients who are in remote areas. The device can be worn either as a necklace or as a belt and continuously monitors and analyzes a patient’s ECG.

Amrita UMS develops and supports all the major university-wide administrative and learning management systems.

  • The project titled “An automated system to mitigate loss of life at unmanned level crossings " is funded by Texas Instruments India. Mr. V. Anantha Narayanan is the Principal Investigator. The duration of the project is 6 months. 

  • This research project identifies an appropriate combination of metal-elastomeric module configuration, using multi-layer shear damped viscoelastic approach, for mitigating the structure-bound vibrations on to the sensitive equipment. The composites are made of a metal (aluminium), and an elastomer (natural rubber and silicone rubber).

  • Around view system is a system which enables the driver to see surrounding around the vehicle in such a way that it is being viewed from the top. Cameras placed around the vehicle capture images at an angle with respect to the ground normal. If the angle were parallel to the ground normal then the captured images look like being taken from the top.

  • The autonomous floor cleaning robot is designed to sweep and collect the dust and mop the room as well. The sweeping of the floor and collecting the dust happens one after the other followed by mopping the room. The intelligent mechanism added to the robot can identify and avoid obstacles while cleaning the robot. The autonomous algorithm, which is part of the design, takes care of operating the robot autonomously inside the room.

  • This project is about building automated wheelchair for the elderly and physically challenged. It takes any destination which lies within a particular mapped location as input, calculates the shortest path to that location, and takes the user to the destination without any external aid. The entire floor plan of the house is divided as grids and coordinates are identified. Two different implementation mechanisms are available: FPGA based VLSI implementation and Raspberry-Pi based Embedded System implementation. LARN algorithm - Location Awareness and Remembrance Navigation algorithm is designed using Djikstra's shortest path algorithm to implement the auto-navigation functionality.

  • This project aims at understanding cognitive functioning of cerebellar input layer and implement signal processing abilities into neural hardware using cerebellar architecture. The main goals include understanding cerebellum granule neuron’s role in signal propagation and information processing in a central neuronal network. The other major focus will be on the analysis of cerebellar microcircuits for designing electronic neural processors.

Although, cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been identified in leukemia and solid tumours by surface markers, there is variability in their specificity for isolation of CSCs in a specific tumour.

  • There are more than 2.5 million cancer patients in India at any given time, of which the frequency of breast and ovarian cancer cases has increased. Although there are many possible reasons, reversible phosphorylation of proteins, mediated by receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) such as VEGF and HER2/neu receptors play a crucial role on different cellular processes associated with cancer pathogenesis.

  • Amrita Research Labs has developed this integrated telemedicine solution for linking various clinics and hospitals located in the remote areas of India with Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center (AIMS), Kochi. Telemedicine, reduced to its simplest form, is connecting geographically separate health care facilities via telecommunications, video, and information systems.

  • This center established in 2008 with funding from DST to develop a high efficiency solar cell based on the use of nanostructured electrodes and a dye sensitized approach. Currently this research involves a combination of the use of organic and dye sensitized approaches to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of the solar cells.

  • This project proposes to develop a cerebellum inspired pattern recognition algorithm for robotic data classification. The project aims to investigate the temporal and spatial dynamics in the cerebellar network models capable of predicting cerebellar input-output transformations by analyzing the mathematical and computational properties of the network. Both labs have been working together since 2004 on cerebellar models.

  • Stairs of different sizes and shapes and variety of designs are available in various households. We always find odd to clean the stair case steps and cleaning several steps in multistoried buildings is in itself a task. Using robots for cleaning surface, glass, rooms etc. are not new and are in the field of research for more than a decade. But when it comes to stair case cleaning, we see that the research area is only few years old. The main reason is the enormous difference is design mechanism when it comes to vertical climbing robots compared to the robots that move over surface. These robots function in 3-D space where as surface cleaning robots function in 2-D space which is comparatively easier to design and implement compared to the 3-D space robots. Our 'ClePa' is designed to operate in 3-D space  with several features including: manual control, semi-autonomous and fully-autonomous control, crawler based mobility mechanism, stationary and dynamic obstacle detection and avoidance and threshold detection.

  • Amrita Vidyalayam eLearning Network (AVeN) was inaugurated on 4th Feb, 2008 by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, at Kochi. This network hosts multimedia educational content that allows sharing of training material and incorporates modules for student assignments. The adaptive assessment and learning programme adjusts automatically to a student’s learning level.

  • Docking studies are computational techniques for the exploration of the possible binding modes of a substrate to a given receptor, enzyme or other binding site. The application of computational methods to study the formation of intermolecular complexes has been the subject of intensive research during the last decade.

Reconstruction of network activity has proved to be a hard task. This project will study cellular function using multi-scale models of single cells and networks will be developed with NEURON.

  • In the modern world, controlled release of drug (CR) represent one of the very important areas in the medical field. These delivery systems offer numerous advantages, compared with conventional dosage forms, which include no side effects, improved efficacy, reduced toxicity, and improved patient compliance. The biodegradable polymers such sodium alginate (SA) and lignosulphonic acid (LS) are used, in order to investigate the CR of ciprofloxacin from SA/LS blends.

Amrita and Wipro has envisaged a patient-centric solution wherein low cost diabetes care devices (glucose strips, glucometers & insulin pumps) will interact with users through mobile applications using the cloud gateway. Innovative features of the device will make diabetes management easier for Indian patients and physicians. While Amrita Institute has in-house capabilities of making innovative low-cost diabetes-care product prototypes, it understandably does not have expertise in incorporating these devices into an integrated infrastructure where the devices can act as touch points between the patient and the healthcare provider through smart interfaces. With a proven track record in fields like remote patient monitoring and cloud & mobile connectivity, Wipro has the perfect complementary expertise in making cloud gateway and infrastructure, device-to-application data transfer and interactive platforms. Thus the synergy between Amrita and Wipro promises to leverage their individual strengths and provide an integrated diabetes care solution.
