The students of the Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA- Semester 4) at the department of Computer Science and Applications, Amrita School of Engineering, visited Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi’s, home for orphaned children at Parippally on Febraury 1, 2015. Included below are excerpts from student experiences. We S4BCA students of Department of Computer Science and Applications conducted a workshop on Java last semester. The whole workshop was a fundraiser for an orphanage visit we had planned. The idea first occurred while we were in our second semester; however, somebody put forth the suggestion that rather that collecting the money from our parents (most of us are students WITHOUT a part-time job), we would raise our own money. And it was after months of planning (and a semester later) that we finally organized a workshop and collected an amount of 50 rupees from every entry.

Encouraged by Amma’s message that everyone should be able to eat vegetables grown organically at least once in a week, the college students at Amrita University’s Amritapuri campus have started an organic vegetable garden using natural methods of cultivation. The garden is flourishing with the growth of colorful, delicious produce, including spinach, okra, tomatoes, tapioca, green chilies, cauliflower, pumpkins, and bananas. The students take turns coming every day to water and tend to the plants, with Wednesdays set aside for all the students to work together. When a plant begins to produce fruits or vegetables, the students are always keen to offer these first gifts of nature to Amma.

Amrita Sanjeevani, the Seva Association of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Amritapuri Campus was formed to provide an opportunity to students and staff at Amrita University to engage in social service. When the tsunami hit the area on December 26, 2004, students and staff who were present at that time pitched in wholeheartedly to do the needful. Chancellor Amma, seeing their desire to serve, suggested that a seva association be formally launched and Amrita Sanjeevani was born. “Pray with your heart, serve with your hands”, a quote from Amma’s tsunami message became the motto of the organization.
