Two students of the First Year MBA-MS Dual degree programme participated in the Budget 2012 – ‘Analysis and Opportunities Thereof’ competition, organized by the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Bangalore and secured the first place in the contest. The students team consisting of Rohini M. and Gautam Nambiar, competed against teams from NMIMS Bangalore, Welingkar(WLC) Bangalore and Chetana Institute of Management Studies.

The judges present at the Budget meet included Professor R.S. Deshpande, Director-Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Mr.Anuj Madan, AVP, Investment Counsellor, Citibank, Mr.Sekhar Doraswamy, Finance Director at Dell India, Mr.Deepak Rao, Senior Manager, Tax and Regulatory Services at Ernst and Young and Mr.Sriram Ramaswamy, Associate Director, Tax Advisory Services at Ernst and Young.

Being judged as the best team in the competition, the ASB Bangalore team received certificates and a cash prize. Besides the event also provided an opportunity for all participants to interact with each other and experts from different fields.

The students of Amrita School of Business (ASB), Bangalore successfully organized a Budget meet to discuss the key points of the Union Budget 2012-13. The third edition of the Budget meet organized by the ASB Bangalore students was taken up with the right mindset and fervour.

The Budget meet began with the release of the Budget handbook by Dr.G.Thimmaiya. The budget handbook had been specially prepared by the first year students of the MBA-MS dual degree programme and edited by the Student Editors –Nikita Hari and Timmy G.Jose.

The presenters – Rohini M. and Nisha Nair set the momentum for the Budget discussion session by making presentations pertaining to the Economic Survey of India and the Overall Expected Receipts and Expenditures for the fiscal year 2012-13.

The student presentations were followed by presentations by each of the invited speakers. Dr.G.Thimmaiya,Ex.Planning Commission Member brought home the point that the new budget was intended to divert the savings of the common man to the Rajiv Equity Savings Scheme, which was being formed to finance infrastructure projects and boost capital formation.

Mr.B.Ramkumar,VP. Finance, IT and Logistics,Sasken Communication India spoke about the proposed tax reforms . In particular Mr.Ramkumar highlighted the possible impacts of the proposed steps to tax cross border deals and make retrospective amendments to the prevailing Income Tax Act. The provisions of the Budget 2012-13 that, includes hike in the excise duties and service tax from 10 percent to 12 percent are expected to make Gold and Platinum costlier and Silver cheaper. This again reinforces the attempts being made by the Finance Minister Sri Pranab Mukherjee to prevent wasteful consumption and use the savings of the masses to fund vital infrastructure projects.

Professor R.S.Deshpande, Director, Institute for Social and Economic Change, highlighted the agricultural scene of the country. The lot of poorer farmers have started contemplating selling their land to finance their children’s higher education needs so that they could make a living doing government service and working with established MNC’s in the country. The schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) have assured the rural labourers with atleast 100 days of work and this has provided them with a good source of income. The rural labourers prefer to sit back and stay away from hard work involved in crop cultivation. This degradation of the work culture is dangerous and is expected to further detiorate the lifestyle of the Indians.

The moderators Karthika S., Subburamm N. and Gautam N. also did a great job by asking certain key questions to the speakers. The budget proposal to tax income earned by the start-ups from angel investors is a major cause of worry for the Venture Capital (VC) Association of India as many start-ups wouldn’t be able to list in the stock exchanges and accept funds from the VC’s. This whole budget proposal was rubbished by Dr.G.Thimmaiah and he assured the interested entrepreneurs not to worry about the budget clause as it would definitely not be implemented.

The Budget meeting concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Nitin Gangadharan and was followed up by dinner with the invited speakers.

Two second year students of Amrita School of Business, Bengaluru Campus Vishakh Vinod and Abhirami Nambiar got a unique chance to present a case at the case conference at Dhruva college of Management Hyderabad.

Thanks to their faculty members Dr. Pooja Sharma and Dr. M G Deepika who developed the case titled “Rebranding Bajaj- Dropping Family Name from its Two Wheeler Segment- A case study” and made the students defend the case in the case competition. The international case writing competition was held on 1st December 2011 at Dhruva college of Management in Hyderabad in collaboration with Global Management Center, California State University, San Bernardino, USA. The case presentations witnessed a plethora of dilemmas flying around the room. Students of Amrita School of Business Bangalore got a chance to test their presentation skills and analytical skills thanks to various presentations ranging from exclusive cases of dilemma faced by small time suppliers of Multinational Corporations just to keep up with the expectations of these behemoths to ethical dilemma over the current Open University format of MBA courses and the delivery in classroom format. The case presented raises the debate on Bajaj Auto Ltd’s intention to drop the family name in its two wheeler segment and the likely implications for the Company on making such a move. In doing so it elaborates the branding strategies adopted by Bajaj Auto Ltd since the last two decades as a reaction to growing competition in the two wheeler industry.



Sankranti-transform urban India was a national level student challenge organised by the Indian Institute of Human Settlement (IIHS) on November 17 - 20, 2011. The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is a national education institution committed to the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements. Sankranti was a platform for the youth to present their perceptions of urbanisation and contribute towards enhancing the standard of living in cities as well as rural areas.

The challenge was conducted as a part of Indian Urban Conference (IUC).The IUC was a series of events designed to raise the salience of urban challenges and opportunities in the on-going debate on India's development. The organisers of the event was the IIHS , Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy and Yale University.The event was conducted at Mysore Infosys campus. There were 189 teams who had participated in the first stage out which top 20 teams were selected for the second stage. Out of these 20 teams two teams were selected from AMRITA SCHOOL OF BUSSINESS, BANGALORE. The other shortlisted teams included TISS, SPA, IIT’s etc. The first team consisted of Alamelupriya.R, Animasree.B.S, BhanupriyankaSivala, Meghanababu,ShilpaK.V.The other team consisted of Gopikrishnan, Gowtham.M.K, Pradeep.B, Ramkumar, yaswanth togaru reddy. Every team who were shortlisted was provided with three mentors to guide them through the event. The mentors were experienced people from different sectors. They were assigned according to the projects of the team.

The mentors included Mr. Anjan Ray,the Regional Commercial Director, Renewable Energy and Chemicals UOP and contributed towards Deployment of Biofuels and Bio-energy technologies in the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia, Mr. Shridhar Lolla, Chief Strategy Officer (Interim) RemidioManaging Partner at CVMark Consulting, Mr. Manish Singal. The judging panel included Vasudev Avadhani ,Mentor & Advisor, NSRCEL @ IIMB on challenges facing urban India; Shirish Patel, Chairperson Emeritus, SPAC and IIHS board member on New Bombay, land acquisition, the urban professional and IIHS. Xerxes Desai, MD Emeritus, TITAN Industries and IIHS board member on team building process, working on the New Bombay project, kinds of innovation cities need and the IIHS learner.M


First year students attended a conference on the MUMBAI DABBAWALA’S organized by CII and Yi in collaboration with the Welingkar Institute of Management Development on 19 October, 2011. The chief guest and the speaker for the session was Dr. Pawan Agarwal (CEO of AGARWAL INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY). He has done his PhD in “A Study & Logistics & Supply Chain Management of Dabbawala in Mumbai

The talk was about the logistics and the supply chain management of DABBAWALA’s. A DABBAWALA is a person who carries lunch for working people of the Mumbai city for more than a century. They carry the food from their homes to the offices and then take them back and deliver the empty lunch boxes at their respective houses. The work sounds simple, but it is actually a highly specialized trade that has become an integral part of Mumbai‘s culture.

The dabbawala originated when a person named Mahadeo Havaji Bachche started the lunch delivery service with about 100 men. According to the dabbawala’s work is worship, with 100% customer satisfaction and no error. The error rate of these workers is estimated to be 1 in 16 million transactions. They charge around Rs. 300 per month which is a standard price all through Mumbai. They have a record of not going for a strike till date. Their diwali bonus is one month’s salary from each customer. To add to their credentials they have received an ISO 9001:2000 certification, six sigma, etc.

ANNUAL MANUFACTURING CONFERENCE 2011 - "Lean, green and Safe Manufacturing"

Dr. Doreswamy, Dr. Usha Nandhini and first MBA Students attended Annual Manufacturing Conference 2011 - "Lean, Green & Safe Manufacturing" in association with CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and Department of Commerce of Commerce and Industries, Government of Karnataka at Taj West End, Bangalore on 20 October, 2011

The students gained insight on the innovation, processes and effectiveness on “Lean, Green and Safe Manufacturing”. The sessions by various experts made paricipants aware of the cost reduction and profit maximization techniques by means of lean manufacturing. How the organizations are focusing on the environment friendly operations of manufacturing, was brought into lime-light by the experts present in the panel. The safety measures to be adopted and their importance, with respect to the organization and environment and the pros and cons of not adopting them were well stressed upon. This will definitely show a new path towards development and social concern to the upcoming corporate and entrepreneurs of future India.
