The Amrita School of Engineering at Amrita began offering the B. Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2005. The program provides excellent technical knowledge in emerging areas of Electrical Engineering.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering continues to transform the way we live from the latest consumer products to sophisticated scientific, industrial and healthcare technologies. Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.

Integrating computer programming, electronics and communication with electrical engineering, makes this discipline the most interesting branch of engineering. Job opportunities are ample in both private and public sector like railways, civil aviation, power plants and utility companies, electrical design and consultancy firms and all types of manufacturing industries.

Department faculty members actively supported the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides.

The technology deployed had several advantages over conventional technologies in terms of cost, size and power consumption. 

The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Amritapuri Campus is committed to mould the students for global requirements by providing quality education to meet the needs of the industry. The Department has a fine blend of renowned as well as young and dynamic personalities as faculty members, who have been motivating the students for getting the best out of them.

The department of EEE aims at being the world class centre in Electrical Engineering education through excellent teaching, applied research and professional services, for the benefit of the society. The department is having well equipped state-of-art laboratories and research facilities.

The research at the department aims to take up projects meeting to the needs of the society. The department's research efforts are improved by collaborations with leading research universities and industries around the world.Faculty members of the Department have been involved in the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides.

They also have been supporting the MHRD-funded Haptics Project for e-learning initiatives.

In addition, several university-funded projects are currently ongoing in the Robotics Lab.

The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering is credited with state-of-the-art laboratories i.e., Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Electrical Measurements, Control & Instrumentation and Electrical & Electronics Workshop. The Department is also well equipped with a number of PCs and workstations hosting several software packages and linked through a local area network. Internet services are available to all students and faculty.

1. Robotics lab

Robotics is multi-disciplinary in nature and requires that students learn from and interact closely with students from allied branches of study. The Amrita Robotics Lab has been initiated to provide Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students a center from which to develop and implement robotic technology. This goal oriented research center will enable students from multiple disciplines to learn, create, and apply knowledge in a variety of advanced topics such as machine vision and image processing, Digital Signal Processing and speech recognition, advanced algorithms, digital architecture development, communication networks, Mechatronics and electronic controls, and Artificial Intelligence, among others.

Students in all three Schools of Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham have the option to study Robotics as an elective subject.

At Amritapuri and Bangalore campuses, the Robotics Labs supplement what is taught in the classroom with practical and hands-on experience. These labs have been the genesis for many successful student projects, providing the space and tools that students need to work on these complex projects.

An important aspect of the Amrita Robotics Lab is its ability to harness Indias world renowned natural skills, talents, and resources in computer science, programming, and internet technology. This makes the Amrita Robotics Lab an ideal training place for students seeking to add practical experience to their theoretical studies. The multi-disciplinary nature of robotics work will draw students from Computer Science, Internet Technology, Electronics, Electrical, and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and others. The integration of these fields will require disciplined and coordinated team skills; further training Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students for valuable leadership and teamwork positions in industry. A new logo for the club was framed with the icon "LEARN, INNOVATE AND EXCEL".

Chakshyaan, translated from Sanskrit and approximately defined as "vehicle-with-eyes" is the name of an ambitious undertaking by third year mechanical and electronics engineering students. These students are creating a remote control flying vehicle with video capability. Funded by their college, they are constructing on a hover craft which will have the ability to take videos at a given location and transmit data back to a base station. Incidentally, Dr. Abdul Kalam's first ever project as a scientist was to build a hover craft, and it was the first time Indian scientists had succeeded on such a endeavor without any help from the western scientific community.

Other student groups are working on hybrid rickshaw projects. Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws that can run on diesel, electricity or solar power are being designed and tested, and one of these projects has even received funding from a group in the US.

Initially in June 2006, a team of students built a robot whose movements could easily be monitored and controlled using a computer. Soon after this, in response to overwhelming interest from the student community, the Robotics Lab began. Concurrently, Josh Freeman, who has a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in the US and has several years work experience with General Motors, joined Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. He was inspired by Amma's vision to build a world-class research and teaching institution in India and was asked to take charge of the lab. From its inception, Josh and his students have painstakingly built the lab, equipping it with state-of-the-art supplies that are needed to complete various projects.

2. Electrical Machine Lab

In this lab students are introduced to various types of machines and their characteristics through practical experience. All types of DC Machines, single phase and three phase squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, single-phase and three phase transformers, suitable starters and loading arrangements for machines, Kirloskar made DC motor- 3 ph Alternator set and measuring instruments of all types needed for laboratory experiments are available.

Each machine is provided with a work bench having well designed movable connecting panels made from thick hylum sheet (with attractive printing on it). Other major equipment includes general-purpose rotating electrical machines & test benches, a variety of single phase & 3 phase transformers, synchronous / DC machine sets and variable-frequency inverters. 

3. Electrical Measurements Lab

In this lab students can perform experiments related to digital electronics (arithmetic and sequential circuits, shift registers, counter etc.) using digital trainer kits.

The lab also provides various measurement kits such as Wheatstone bridge and Kelvin bridge for measurement of unknown resistance, Schering bridge for measurement of unknown capacitance and Anderson bridge for measurement of unknown inductance. Certain other experiments on LVDT and Synchro are available as well.

4. Control and Instrumentation Lab

Students do experiments on Torque Measurement Kit, Dead Weight Pressure Gauge, Level Control Unit and Temperature Measurement Kit. The Lab also contains PC based experiments like Speed Control of Stepper Motor, Speed Control of DC motor and Flow Loop Control.

This lab equips students with knowledge on various transducers and their applications, PC based control applications (PID method). Plans are in the making to expand the lab by adding programmable logic controllers and simulation software like LABVIEW.

5. Power Systems Lab

The Department recently set up a power systems laboratory having 30 computers. The latest advanced power system simulation software including PSCAD, ETAP and MiPower have been installed. These will help students to simulate power systems and carry out load flow analysis, short circuit study, relay coordination and harmonic analysis. The latest versions of ORCAD and MATLAB software packages are also provided for proficient computing, simulation and analysis.

The lab also has an electrical panel with relay fitted for experiments, which includes Three Phase IDMT Over Current Relay, Definite Time Over Current-under Voltage Relays, Motor Protection Relay, Transformer Differential Relay, Master Trip Relay, Conventional Test Kit and Numerical Test Kit.

6. Power Electronics Lab

The power electronics lab includes hardware experiments conducted for EEE students in order to explore knowledge on the following topics: Study of characteristics of SCR, MOSFET and IGBT, triggering circuits, rectifiers, controlled rectifiers using SCRs and uncontrolled rectifiers using diodes and semi-converter circuits, choppers, dc-dc converters, inverters and dc-ac converters using MOSFETs and PWM techniques.

Software experiments are conducted using Microsim OrCAD PSPICE with the latest Version 16 installed in the computer lab for Power Systems.

7. Electrical and Electronics Workshop

The workshop provides basic practical knowledge about Electrical and Electronics on:

  • Familiarization of different types electronic components and measuring instruments
  • PCB fabrication and soldering
  • Identification of PC hardware parts and familiarization of microprocessor trainer kits
  • House wiring practice and working of electrical protective devices,
  • functioning of some commonly used home appliances and different types of electric lamps


In addition to regular experiments, students take on mini-projects as a part of their workshop practice. During this process, students gain confidence in executing electrical and electronic projects irrespective of their branch of engineering. At the end of the semester, a project exhibition is presented, and this, in turn, motivates students to create more complex projects and to attempt competition in future project exhibitions.

Every year the department conducts Faculty Development Programs, Workshops, co-ordinates Seminars and Student Paper Presentations to present the students and faculties with opportunities to exhibit their talents and improve their  skills by having a healthy competition among their peers. Amrita brings about the best in each student by providing them ample opportunities to organize and co-ordinate many regional, national and international workshops, seminars, technical fests, participate in a lot of international programming contests. Students and faculty from Amrita have consistently been taking part in many contests and achievements at the global level and this persistent participation in such large numbers have acquired the praise of the co-ordinators.

Workshop Conducted

  1. STTP on Electric Power Systems

    STTP on Electric Power Systems sponsored by ISTE was conducted between 10th to 15th July 2017, by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Amritapuri campus in association with IIT Kharagpur under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India).

    This workshop dealt with several modules such as power generation, transmission and distribution along with stability analysis and protection. It also covered advanced topics such as smart grid, demand response, IoT and electricity markets.

     

    This remote learning workshop utilized the A-VIEW software developed by E-Learning Department at Amritapuri campus. This remote interactive course content was delivered by renowned Professors from reputed institutions including, Professor N.K. Kishore, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, Professor Shreevardhan A. Soman, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay and Professor Gautam Bandyopadhyay, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIEST Kolkata.The STTP was coordinated by Dr. Ravikumar Pandi, Asst. Professor of EEE Department.

  2. Workshop on Arduino Microcontrollers

    Workshop on Arduino Microcontrollers was organised by Mr. Anudev J. Assistant Professor, EEE Department on March 8, 2017. The sessions were handled by Mr. Bharath K. R., Assistant Professor, EEE Department, to bestow basic knowledge on Arduino Microcontroller: hardware, software, installation and applications. Many B.Tech students from EEE Department attended the workshop and secured aspiring experience.

ELYZIA

This is the Electrical Engineering Students' Association. The association facilitates technical visits / practical training / project work / employment of student members in R & D laboratories, industries and academic institutions.

It plays a pivotal role in organizing the distinguished lectures for the Department. The Association seeks to encourage team work and the spirit of self reliance among its student members.

Some of ELYZIA's activities include the following:

  1. Visit to Load dispatch center and Substation Students were provided the unique opportunity of discovering "cutting edge" technology emerging in the industrial sector. On November 5, 2009 final year students participated in an industrial visit to the State Load Dispatch Centre and Substation at Kalamasseri. Amidst their hectic academic schedule, these students also enjoyed the chance to relax during this excursion.
  2. Distinguished Lecture on Energy Conservation in Daily Life" Dr. P.S. Chandramohan, Department chairperson and former Director, ANERT, delivered a speech on energy conservation in daily life for all staff members of Amritapuri campus on February 2, 2009. A tele film, Energy Maman, was also presented. This session was definitely enlightening to all participants who learned about the importance of energy conservation and methods that can be implemented into our daily life.
  3. Workshop on Circuit Design ELYZIA, in association with IEEE students chapter, organized a workshop on Circuit Design for July 18, 2008. Students participated with hands-on training on PSPICE for circuit design. Br. Sridhar Babu, Asst. Professor, EEE Department, managed the sessions.
  4. Lamhe 2009 Farewell to Seniors A farewell function, Lamhe 2009, was organized by pre-final year students for the outgoing batch of the Department on May 9, 2009. The main attraction was the cultural program which included skits, speeches and games.
  5. Connect '09 Welcome to Incoming First Year Students Newcomers of the EEE Department were given a warm welcome by the Students Association, ELYZIA on July 30, 2009. This function helped to establsh a cordial relationship between senior students and first year incoming students along with providing information about the facilities and norms of the college.

  1. Global Event: IEEE International (Biennial) Conference – TAP ENERGY 2017 :

    With the sense of fulfilment in becoming a prominent hub for sharing innovations and ideas within a short span of time, the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus organized its second global event, IEEE International (Biennial) Conference on Technological Advancement in Power and Energy - TAP Energy 2017during 21st – 23rd December 2017. Besides the technical richness, the conference excelled in organizational and event management features with the joint support of IEEE Kerala Section and IEEE Power & Energy Society. The conference was chaired by Dr. Manjula G. Nair, Professor & Chairperson, Department of EEE, ASE-Amritapuri and was coordinated byDr. Ilango K, Ms. Sreelekshmi R. S., and Mr. MeherMadhuDharmana, Assistant Professors of the Department.

    TAP ENERGY 2017 received more than 370 paper submissions from 7 countries in addition to India: Japan, China, Singapore, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Morocco and U.A.E were among them. After careful analysis and expert reviews, 179 papers were accepted for presentation in five different tracks namely Power and Energy, Control and Automation, Green Technologies, Computational Technologies and Smart Markets, Trading & Business Models. The participants presented papers in 6 parallel sessions, reviewed by eminent session chairs from all over India. Top three presented papers in the conference received “Prof. Mohammed H. Rashid Best Paper Award” from Dr. Ilangovan Group Director, Chemical System, VSSC during the valedictory function. Mr.V. C. Vijayakumar, Former Head, Application Development Division, VSSC delivered the valedictory address.

     

Invited Talks

  • Prof. Muhammad. H. Rashid,Florida Polytechnic University, USA,was the Chief Guest of TAP ENERGY 2017. The inaugural function was followed by a special technical talk from the Chief Guest on “The Future of Power Electronics”. In his address, he talked about how energy has to be tapped from every renewable source available. He spoke about the evolution and contribution of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and concluded by putting a relevant point to educate the society to conserve energy.

Bhuvaneshwari, Professor, IIT Delhi, delivered an invited talk on “Modern Control Strategies in Renewable Energy Systems”, briefing on the Wind Energy Conversion Systems, Solar Energy Conversion Systems and Hybrid Energy Systems. Her presentation gave detailed explanation about the evolution of wind energy power conversion systems and opportunities and challenges in utilizing the Permanent Magnet Generators based systems. She also briefed about various converter topologies and its control technologies along with the recent developments happening in research area.

  • Dr. Prahalad Vadakkepat,Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore, spoke about “Robotics and Artificial Intelligence towards Digital Labour”. He pointed out that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have a fundamental impact on the global labour market in the next few years. He spoke about the innovative ways in which Artificial Intelligence and robotics simplify the tedious activities and presented the map of future where human co-exist with robots.

  • Dr. Bipin Nair,Professor, Dean, School of Biotechnology, Amritapuri, delivered an invited talk on“Harnessing the potential of Microbes: Power from the micro (be)grid”. He outlined the importance of ensuring access to sustainable energy, water and sanitation for all. He explained about the conversion of biomassinto electricity using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). He pointed out that MFCs canmove forward toward large-scale implementations for both power generation and extended applications in future.

  • Dr.Prabaharan Poornachandran, Assistant Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, delivered a talk concerning ‘IoT (in) Security’ in which he unveiled the dangers of IoT devices and pros and cons of smart cities. He also presented many facts and reports of IoT attacks happening on a global scale. His presentation gave detailed explanation about vulnerabilities in IoT based power systems and the need for making such systems more secure and safe.

  1. Inauguration of Student Clubs

    Amrita Robotics Club and Amrita Renewable Energy Club entirely devised, designed and run by the students of Amritapuri campusmentored by faculty members of EEE Department, Mr. Bharath K. R. and Mr. Meher Madhu Dharmana, were inaugurated by Dr. K. P. Mohandas on 21st December 2017. Robotics club aims at promoting the keen interest of students in the applications of DSP, Embedded Systems, Automation, Power Supply Design and Robotic Innovation. Renewable Energy club aims to encourage students’ innovation utilizing the renewable energy resources for the benefit of society. These clubs encourage students to participate in International and National level technical competitions and conferences. Hands on workshops and Industrial visits are regular activities of these student clubs to develop subject knowledge and technical skills in Renewable Energy and Robotics & Automation.

     

  2. Hardware Demonstration of Research Work and Poster Presentation

    Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering is keen in regularly providing a platform for students every year which bring to lime light their research work, receiving appreciation from the expert evaluators, faculty members and students from various Departments and Research centres. This year also a demonstration of hardware projects and poster presentation of final year students were arranged on May 10, 2017. The projects showcased by the students spanned over various aspects of electrical and electronics engineering like Control and Instrumentation, Robotics & Automation, Power system operation & control, Renewable energy harvesting etc. Most of the projects were product based with focus on developing solutions of social, economic and industrial impact. These projects were evaluated by Dr. Vinod Kumar Gopal and Mr. Pramod Sreedharan, Assistant Professors of Mechanical Department, Amritapuri Campus.

  3. Lab Orientation Programme

    Lab Orientation Programme : A two day workshop was organised by EEE Department, Amritapuri on on 2nd and 3rd January 2017. The programme intended to impart deep knowledge and hands on training in simulation and hardware laboratory experiments in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The sessions were attended by faculty members and lab supporting staff of the Department.

    A team of engineering students of the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri campus, won the Overall Championship title at the National Solar Vehicle Challenge (NSVC) 2019.   2. National Solar Vehicle Challenge: Overall Champions

    On March 24, 2017, a grand event named National Solar Vehicle Challenge was held at Mehasana, Gujarat. The EEE team named “Mavericks”, comprising 3rd and 2nd year students of the EEE Department., Amritapuri Campus guided by faculty members Mr Bharath K.R (Assistant Professor), Dr Ilango K (Assistant Professor) and Mr Sreenivasan (Technical staff) won the Overall Championshipfor their three wheeled solar powered battery driven electrical vehicle named “Karna”.They also came first in the 'Drag Race' and 'Endurance test' at the national event under 'Make in India' challenge. The team received a cash prize of RsOne lakh thirty thousand.   3. ECOKART: 4th Position in Innovation Round

    ECOKART is a National Event for students pursuing Engineering Degree / Diploma. The Competition is to design and fabricate a single passenger Kart which is operated by a battery. The fourth season of the competition known as ECOKART 2017, was held at the BML Munjal University, Gurgaon, Haryana in March 2017.Team ‘Garuda’ consisting of 15 students of the EEE Department under the guidance of MrArunRajendran (Assistant Professor) and with the whole hearted support of Mr Sreenivasan M. K. (Technical staff) represented Amrita University, Amritapuri campus in the competition. The competition was of three rounds starting with an Online virtual round along with marketing round and Dynamic round. About 102 teams had passed the online virtual round. Team ‘Garuda’ was the only team from Kerala to have passed the virtual round. Out of the 72 teams which participated in the dynamic round team ‘Garuda’ was awarded 4th position in innovation round and secured 20th place in overall category. The team included Adwait S. Anand, Ajay, Anirudh K V, Aromal V.B., Arun, Dheeraj Krishna V., Gokulnath G.L., Sarang S., SreeramThattat, Ananda Krishnan Nair, Amrithesh, Gopikrishna S. Menon, K.   4. Best Paper Award

    In District level seminar competition organised by KSEB Engineer’s Association with the support of IEEE Power and Energy Society, Kerala Chapter held on Feb 10, 2017, Naufal N and Aswin Sasidharan of M. Tech., 2nd Year (Power and Energy) secured the FIRST Position for their paper presentation on “Power System Harmonics Sources, Issues and Mitigation”.

  5. AICTE-ECI Chaatra Vishwakarma Award

    Final year BTech students from Department of EEE, Amritapuri campus, won the third position in the prestigious, 1st AICTE-ECI Chaatra Vishwakarma Award, in the Students' Project Competition organized by AICTE in collaboration with ECI (Engineering Council of India) held at AICTE headquarters, New Delhi. The group consisting of Arjun, Dilip, Anirudh and Gireesh (team ‘Mavericks’) was guided by Mr. Bharath K. R., Asst. Professor, Department of EEE.
