The Amrita School of Engineering at Amrita began offering the B. Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2005. The program provides excellent technical knowledge in emerging areas of Electrical Engineering.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering continues to transform the way we live from the latest consumer products to sophisticated scientific, industrial and healthcare technologies. Electrical and Electronics Engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.

Integrating computer programming, electronics and communication with electrical engineering, makes this discipline the most interesting branch of engineering. Job opportunities are ample in both private and public sector like railways, civil aviation, power plants and utility companies, electrical design and consultancy firms and all types of manufacturing industries.

Department faculty members actively supported the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides.

The technology deployed had several advantages over conventional technologies in terms of cost, size and power consumption.

The research at the department aims to take up projects meeting to the needs of the society. The department's research efforts are improved by collaborations with leading research universities and industries around the world.Faculty members of the Department have been involved in the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides.

They also have been supporting the MHRD-funded Haptics Project for e-learning initiatives.

In addition, several university-funded projects are currently ongoing in the Robotics Lab.

The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering is credited with state-of-the-art laboratories i.e., Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Electrical Measurements, Control & Instrumentation and Electrical & Electronics Workshop. The Department is also well equipped with a number of PCs and workstations hosting several software packages and linked through a local area network. Internet services are available to all students and faculty.

1. Robotics lab

Robotics is multi-disciplinary in nature and requires that students learn from and interact closely with students from allied branches of study. The Amrita Robotics Lab has been initiated to provide Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students a center from which to develop and implement robotic technology. This goal oriented research center will enable students from multiple disciplines to learn, create, and apply knowledge in a variety of advanced topics such as machine vision and image processing, Digital Signal Processing and speech recognition, advanced algorithms, digital architecture development, communication networks, Mechatronics and electronic controls, and Artificial Intelligence, among others.

Students in all three Schools of Engineering at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham have the option to study Robotics as an elective subject.

At Amritapuri and Bangalore campuses, the Robotics Labs supplement what is taught in the classroom with practical and hands-on experience. These labs have been the genesis for many successful student projects, providing the space and tools that students need to work on these complex projects.

An important aspect of the Amrita Robotics Lab is its ability to harness Indias world renowned natural skills, talents, and resources in computer science, programming, and internet technology. This makes the Amrita Robotics Lab an ideal training place for students seeking to add practical experience to their theoretical studies. The multi-disciplinary nature of robotics work will draw students from Computer Science, Internet Technology, Electronics, Electrical, and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and others. The integration of these fields will require disciplined and coordinated team skills; further training Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham students for valuable leadership and teamwork positions in industry. A new logo for the club was framed with the icon "LEARN, INNOVATE AND EXCEL".

Chakshyaan, translated from Sanskrit and approximately defined as "vehicle-with-eyes" is the name of an ambitious undertaking by third year mechanical and electronics engineering students. These students are creating a remote control flying vehicle with video capability. Funded by their college, they are constructing on a hover craft which will have the ability to take videos at a given location and transmit data back to a base station. Incidentally, Dr. Abdul Kalam's first ever project as a scientist was to build a hover craft, and it was the first time Indian scientists had succeeded on such a endeavor without any help from the western scientific community.

Other student groups are working on hybrid rickshaw projects. Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws that can run on diesel, electricity or solar power are being designed and tested, and one of these projects has even received funding from a group in the US.

Initially in June 2006, a team of students built a robot whose movements could easily be monitored and controlled using a computer. Soon after this, in response to overwhelming interest from the student community, the Robotics Lab began. Concurrently, Josh Freeman, who has a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma in the US and has several years work experience with General Motors, joined Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. He was inspired by Amma's vision to build a world-class research and teaching institution in India and was asked to take charge of the lab. From its inception, Josh and his students have painstakingly built the lab, equipping it with state-of-the-art supplies that are needed to complete various projects.

2. Electrical Machine Lab

In this lab students are introduced to various types of machines and their characteristics through practical experience. All types of DC Machines, single phase and three phase squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, single-phase and three phase transformers, suitable starters and loading arrangements for machines, Kirloskar made DC motor- 3 ph Alternator set and measuring instruments of all types needed for laboratory experiments are available.

Each machine is provided with a work bench having well designed movable connecting panels made from thick hylum sheet (with attractive printing on it). Other major equipment includes general-purpose rotating electrical machines & test benches, a variety of single phase & 3 phase transformers, synchronous / DC machine sets and variable-frequency inverters. 

3. Electrical Measurements Lab

In this lab students can perform experiments related to digital electronics (arithmetic and sequential circuits, shift registers, counter etc.) using digital trainer kits.

The lab also provides various measurement kits such as Wheatstone bridge and Kelvin bridge for measurement of unknown resistance, Schering bridge for measurement of unknown capacitance and Anderson bridge for measurement of unknown inductance. Certain other experiments on LVDT and Synchro are available as well.

4. Control and Instrumentation Lab

Students do experiments on Torque Measurement Kit, Dead Weight Pressure Gauge, Level Control Unit and Temperature Measurement Kit. The Lab also contains PC based experiments like Speed Control of Stepper Motor, Speed Control of DC motor and Flow Loop Control.

This lab equips students with knowledge on various transducers and their applications, PC based control applications (PID method). Plans are in the making to expand the lab by adding programmable logic controllers and simulation software like LABVIEW.

5. Power Systems Lab

The Department recently set up a power systems laboratory having 30 computers. The latest advanced power system simulation software including PSCAD, ETAP and MiPower have been installed. These will help students to simulate power systems and carry out load flow analysis, short circuit study, relay coordination and harmonic analysis. The latest versions of ORCAD and MATLAB software packages are also provided for proficient computing, simulation and analysis.

The lab also has an electrical panel with relay fitted for experiments, which includes Three Phase IDMT Over Current Relay, Definite Time Over Current-under Voltage Relays, Motor Protection Relay, Transformer Differential Relay, Master Trip Relay, Conventional Test Kit and Numerical Test Kit.

6. Power Electronics Lab

The power electronics lab includes hardware experiments conducted for EEE students in order to explore knowledge on the following topics: Study of characteristics of SCR, MOSFET and IGBT, triggering circuits, rectifiers, controlled rectifiers using SCRs and uncontrolled rectifiers using diodes and semi-converter circuits, choppers, dc-dc converters, inverters and dc-ac converters using MOSFETs and PWM techniques.

Software experiments are conducted using Microsim OrCAD PSPICE with the latest Version 16 installed in the computer lab for Power Systems.

7. Electrical and Electronics Workshop

The workshop provides basic practical knowledge about Electrical and Electronics on:

  • Familiarization of different types electronic components and measuring instruments
  • PCB fabrication and soldering
  • Identification of PC hardware parts and familiarization of microprocessor trainer kits
  • House wiring practice and working of electrical protective devices,
  • functioning of some commonly used home appliances and different types of electric lamps


In addition to regular experiments, students take on mini-projects as a part of their workshop practice. During this process, students gain confidence in executing electrical and electronic projects irrespective of their branch of engineering. At the end of the semester, a project exhibition is presented, and this, in turn, motivates students to create more complex projects and to attempt competition in future project exhibitions.

Every year the department conducts Faculty Development Programs, Workshops, co-ordinates Seminars and Student Paper Presentations to present the students and faculties with opportunities to exhibit their talents and improve their  skills by having a healthy competition among their peers. Amrita brings about the best in each student by providing them ample opportunities to organize and co-ordinate many regional, national and international workshops, seminars, technical fests, participate in a lot of international programming contests. Students and faculty from Amrita have consistently been taking part in many contests and achievements at the global level and this persistent participation in such large numbers have acquired the praise of the co-ordinators.

ELYZIA

This is the Electrical Engineering Students' Association. The association facilitates technical visits / practical training / project work / employment of student members in R & D laboratories, industries and academic institutions.

It plays a pivotal role in organizing the distinguished lectures for the Department. The Association seeks to encourage team work and the spirit of self reliance among its student members.

Some of ELYZIA's activities include the following:

  1. Visit to Load dispatch center and Substation Students were provided the unique opportunity of discovering "cutting edge" technology emerging in the industrial sector. On November 5, 2009 final year students participated in an industrial visit to the State Load Dispatch Centre and Substation at Kalamasseri. Amidst their hectic academic schedule, these students also enjoyed the chance to relax during this excursion.
  2. Distinguished Lecture on Energy Conservation in Daily Life" Dr. P.S. Chandramohan, Department chairperson and former Director, ANERT, delivered a speech on energy conservation in daily life for all staff members of Amritapuri campus on February 2, 2009. A tele film, Energy Maman, was also presented. This session was definitely enlightening to all participants who learned about the importance of energy conservation and methods that can be implemented into our daily life.
  3. Workshop on Circuit Design ELYZIA, in association with IEEE students chapter, organized a workshop on Circuit Design for July 18, 2008. Students participated with hands-on training on PSPICE for circuit design. Br. Sridhar Babu, Asst. Professor, EEE Department, managed the sessions.
  4. Lamhe 2009 Farewell to Seniors A farewell function, Lamhe 2009, was organized by pre-final year students for the outgoing batch of the Department on May 9, 2009. The main attraction was the cultural program which included skits, speeches and games.
  5. Connect '09 Welcome to Incoming First Year Students Newcomers of the EEE Department were given a warm welcome by the Students Association, ELYZIA on July 30, 2009. This function helped to establsh a cordial relationship between senior students and first year incoming students along with providing information about the facilities and norms of the college.
