The department aims at creating a knowledge community with strong human values, discerning social awareness and excellent communicative competence.
It strives to impart an appreciation of the finer aspects of life through a clear understanding of the nuances of Language and the aesthetics of Literature in a globalized world.
The department has been functioning from 1994 serving the then College of Engiuneering affiliated to Bharathiyar university and later Anna university.
On becoming an institution, the department started designing and offering courses to students of all disciplines. The present faculty strength is thirteen with members possessing or pursuing Ph. D. The research potential of the department is rich, with faculty members publishing articles in various research areas like Indian Writing in English, Comparative Literature, European Literature, American Literature, American Literature, Post-Colonial Writing, Women’s Writing, Subaltern and Marginalised Literature, Children’s Literature, Translation Studies, etc.

The literary club provides a platform to showcase the literary aspirations and talents of the students. It is an excellent forum for self expression and cultural aspirations of the students. Poetry-reading sessions, debates, extempore speeches, quizzes, cross-word games, book and film reviews, play enactments, and classical movie screenings are showcased at the forum. Besides the English events, the club also organizes events in regional languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi.
A fully computerized 75-seater language lab with state-of-the-art facilities provides an authentic language learning experience. To complement classroom lectures, audio-visual sessions and online examinations are conducted as a part of the teaching-learning process.
Besides the Central Library which is a repository of books, periodicals, online resources like e-journals, e-books, conference proceedings, e-databases, standards, project reports, back-volumes, CD/DVDs and daily news papers, the Department Library supports general reading as well as intensive reading for research, with books of different genres.
A collection of inspirational quotes, regarding the value of a good education, by students articulating their experiences, thoughts, and passion for their academic journey at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
