The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1994 to offer Engineering Mathematics courses for the undergraduate (B. Tech.) programs and post-graduate programs (M. Tech., MCA). Later, from 2003 onwards, the Department started offering elective courses for undergraduate and postgraduate program and also advanced courses for Ph. D. programs. From 2004, the Department has been offering Ph. D. programs in Graph Theory, Multi-wavelet Transforms and Statistics, Magneto hydrodynamics, Lie Algebra Bundles and Cryptography.
Every year the department conducts Faculty Development Programs, Workshops, co-ordinates Seminars and Student Paper Presentations to present the students and faculties with opportunities to exhibit their talents and improve their skills by having a healthy competition among their peers. Amrita brings about the best in each student by providing them ample opportunities to organize and co-ordinate many regional, national and international workshops, seminars, technical fests, participate in a lot of international programming contests.
Inspired by Amma's vision to create a world-class research and teaching institution in India , the past few years have seen a trend of many eminent academicians from around the world having joined Amrita full-time to pursue their careers here. These include not only people of Indian origin but also several people from the West. All three Schools have seen a phenomenon of "brain-gain" versus the more conventional "brain-drain" where-in highly qualified people from the West have moved back to India inspired by Amma's vision for building top centers for learning in India.
The research at the department aims to take up projects catering to the needs of the society. The department's research efforts are improved by collaborations with leading research universities and industries around the world. Students often come up with innovative research ideas and projects that under the able guidance and augmentation of learned faculties.

Mathematics Forum was established to create student curiosity in mathematics. The Forum helps students to appreciate the beauty and subtlety of mathematics and to learn about the origin and development of various fields in mathematics. Students also get opportunities to learn about recent developments which broadens and deepens their knowledge in the field.
