The department of Aerospace Engineering currently exists at the Coimbatore campus alone. The department was established in the year 2007. Most of the faculty members are having doctoral degree. The areas of their research include compressible internal and external flows, aero thermodynamics, hypersonic wakes, non-linear structural mechanics, flight dynamics and control, adaptive filtering etc. The department has acquired MiG 23 fighter aircraft from the Ministry of Defence and anti-submarine, ship-board Kamov-25 helicopter from the Indian Navy. This will help students gain first-hand experience by working on subsystems of a real aircraft and helicopter as part of their Aircraft Design Laboratory class. The department is also setting up desktop water tunnel and low speed (up to 50m/s) wind tunnel (2’ x 2’ – test section) for aerodynamics studies. Tie-ups with the pioneering institutions like National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) etc., have served as eye-openers on the complexities of real life problems, both for the students and faculty members.
The department of Civil Engineering currently exists at the Coimbatore and Bengaluru campuses. The department at Coimbatore was established in the year 1996. The members of faculty are from reputed institutions like IISc, IIT and NIT. The areas of research include soft computing in structural engineering, super plasticizer in cement concrete, water resources engineering, environmental management and geotechnical engineering. The faculty members have published several books and research papers. The department has completed one project on “Development and scale up of plunging hollow jet, venture and sudden expansion type aerators” funded by All India Council for Technical Education.
In Bengaluru campus, the department started in the year 2002-03. The Department functions as an allied Department to cater to the needs of the other branches.
The department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science currently exists at the Coimbatore campus alone. The faculties are engaged in several projects sponsored by ISRO, DRDO and Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. The major areas of research are nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, conducting polymers, solar energy, computational modeling and polymer nanocomposites. Recent major events organized by the department include Indo-Swiss International Conference on Photochemical Conversion of Solar Energy 2010 and National Conference on Smart & Electronic Materials 2009. Student laurels include Plastindia Foundation Gold Medal, Institute of Chemical Engineers Silver Medal and first prize in design contest for a spin coater machine for thin film coating at the national symposium, Shastra at IIT Madras.
The department of Computer Science and Engineering is present in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore campuses. Major areas of research include Wireless Sensor Networks, Image Processing, Searching and indexing of multimedia e-learning content, Clustering Algorithms, Software Engineering, Robotics, Embedded Systems, Bioinformatics, Smart Grid, Machine Learning, Social networks for academic applications and Artificial Intelligence. Faculty members have published several papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals, international and national conferences and book chapters. Interdisciplinary research and joint projects are being pursued with Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi in bioinformatics, image processing and digital health. Faculty members have actively supported the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides. Major events organized include the 1st International conference on Women in Computing in India along with ACM-W in 2010, 13th International conferences on Advanced Computing and Communications (ADCOM) 2005 and Asia Pacific regional contest of ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) since 2005. ACM ICPC is the largest and most prestigious programming contest in the world. AMRITA is an active participant and winner of best institution award in Campus Connect Initiative of Infosys, a unique academia-experience. Students have proved their mettle in various international competitions like IBM Great Mind Challenge, Google summer of code contest, Java One conference etc. An active Free and Open Source Society (FOSS) is actively exploring the usage of Open Source technologies for societal benefits.

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering is present in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore campuses. Several faculty members have received graduate and postgraduate degrees from institutions of international repute such as Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, University of Texas at Austin and University of California, Irvine and have been working on research and development projects in firms across the globe. Several funded research projects have been taken with agencies like DRDO. Active IEEE and IETE professional and student chapters are engaged in organizing various technical activities. Faculty and students have published more than100 papers in reputed international and national conferences like Progress in Electromagnetic Research Symposium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, international conference on Parallel Processing in Vienna and conference on Parallel Processing in Vienna and conferences at Singapore; Johor Bahru, Malaysia and Beijing in the last one year. Students have also won laurels at competitions like Cambridge ESOL competition, Mindtree Osmosis paper contest, Young innovator award at Indian innovation initiative, gold medal in Intel India Embedded Challenge for the project, “Gesture based wheelchair”. One of the annual events is a National Conference in Recent Trends in Communication, Computation and Signal Processing.

Areas of research include power systems, high voltage engineering, and power quality improvement, IT applications to power systems, robotics, electric drives and control, industrial instrumentation, energy management for smart grid and wind energy. Faculty members have published several papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals and papers in conferences. A centre of excellence in wind energy is being set up with the support of the Ministry of Non-Renewable energy of the Government of India. Faculty members are also pursuing various projects with national agencies like ADE, DRDO including a prestigious Indo-Swedish initiative as part of DST Innova scheme in “Energy management for smart grid using embedded systems”. Faculty members have actively supported the European Union funded research project, WINSOC, where a wireless sensor network was deployed for prediction of landslides. Research areas include nano-metrology, nano-fabrication and nano-preision optics, CAD/CAM, bio-diesel process plant, IC engines, electro-chemical micromachining, Mechatronics, Welding of composites, Robotics, Automation and Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Research projects like control of UV Radiation in Welding Processes, online testing of IC engines, Autonomous Mobile Robots Based on Bioinspired Artificial Control, modernization of metallurgy lab are underway with various funding agencies like DRDO, AICTE and DST. Faculty members have published several papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals. One faculty member was conferred the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Women Engineer of the year from Institution of Engineers. SAE student chapters are conducting various activities including hosting the SAE National student convention, SAE India Educational meet, Vintage and Sports Car Exhibitions, aero-show, aero-modeling workshops and guest lectures. SAE BAJA contest for the design of an all-terrain vehicle. Another recent inter-disciplinary student project, Chakshuyaan or vehicle-with-eyes won top awards in many national-level competitions including runners-up in the Young Innovators category for the India Innovation Initiative conducted at IIT Delhi.
The department of Mathematics is present in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore campuses. In Amritapuri campus, the department is attached to the School of Arts and Sciences. However all mathematics papers for the engineering programmes are handled by this department. The major areas of research are Probability & Statistics, Gauss Legendre quadrature formulas, Splines, VLSI Testing, Algebra, Pattern Recognition, Operations Research, Fluid Mechanics, Lie Groups, Graph Theory and Bio-Statistics. ANANTAM, the Mathematics club is conducting various events in Mathematics for students in national and international levels. A National conference on “Quality improvement concepts and their implementations in Higher Educational Institutions” was recently conducted.
The department of Sciences is present in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore campuses. In Amritapuri campus, the department is attached to the School of Arts and Sciences. However all sciences papers for the engineering programmes are handled by this department. Research activities are in the areas of theoretical nuclear physics, thin film physics, nanotechnology, lasers, electrochemical sensors, computational chemistry, electro-deposition of alloys, polymer science, development of Innovative Glucose Biosensor, and Biodiesel from non-edible oils under Alternate Energy development programme, Organometallics, Porphyrin, Cobaloximes, Corrosion Science, cancer related chemistry and science education & popularization. Several research projects are underway with various agencies like DST, CSIR, DRDO and ISRO. Faculty also collaborates with other Engineering disciplines for interdisciplinary research initiatives. The research output includes several books and publications in reputed international and national journals. One faculty member received the Young Scientist award for physical sciences from Kerala State Council of Science, Technology and Environment.
The department of English is present in Amritapuri, Bengaluru and Coimbatore campuses. In Amritapuri campus, the department is attached to the School of Arts and Sciences. However all communicative English papers for the engineering programmes are handled by this department. English language courses are also offered to the School of Communication. Areas of interest include English language teaching methods, applied linguistics, spirituality in literature, Indian writing in English, Comparative, American & European literature. The research output includes several publications in national journals. Apart from the academic activities, the department is also actively involved in activities like publication of College Magazine, Newsletters and activities of the literary club. One of the most sought after events of the literary club is Advaiya, a celebration of languages and dramatics in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi.
