In the fifteen years since its inception, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) has grown from a 115 bed specialty hospital to a 1450 bed super-specialty tertiary care health centre with an attached medical college hospital. On the 17th of May 1998, AIMS was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences is the adjunct to the term "new universalism" coined by the World Health Organization. This massive healthcare infrastructure with over 3,330,000 sq. ft. of built-up area spread over 125 acres of land supports a daily patient volume of about 3000 outpatients with 95 percent inpatient occupancy. Annual patient turnover touches an incredible figure of over 615,000 outpatients and nearly 54,800 inpatients.

The hospital has received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation. It also enjoys accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its laboratories and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital overall. AIMS is part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University). The University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of A.

At the Health Sciences campus, the Amrita School of Medicine, the Amrita Centre for Nanosciences, the Amrita School of Dentistry, the Amrita College of Nursing and the Amrita School of Pharmacy are co-located with AIMS. Committed to providing value-based medical education, these educational institutions strive to instil the qualities of dedication and service in the youth. The Amrita School of Ayurveda located at Amritapuri complements the University's medical competencies in both modern and traditional ways.

AIMS comprises 25 modern operating theatres, 210 fully-equipped intensive-care beds, a fully networked Hospital Information System (HIS), NABL accredited clinical laboratories and a 24/7 telemedicine service. There are a total of 45 departments, including 12 super-speciality ones. It was the first institution in South East Asia to begin using a fully digital imaging service; its radiology department is completely online.

The AIMS team comprises physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals of the highest caliber. There are over 6500 faculty members and more than 4500 staff members. Its network supports more over 2000 computers, digitizing nearly every aspect of patient care, including all patient information, lab testing and radiological imaging. The teleconnectivity provides AIMS a direct link to 36 remote centers in, 32 in the African subcontinent and 6 in other countries. A PET (Positron Emitting Tomography) CT scanner, the first of its kind in the state of Kerala, and which is extremely useful for early detection of cancer, was installed in AIMS. It was inaugurated in July 2009 by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India...Learn More »
