Amrita School for Sustainable Futures (ASF) is centered around making sustainable development a reality for everyone including the most vulnerable communities. Through unique experiential learning initiatives, ASF focuses on providing a blend of learning that is powered by community driven programs that revolves around creating self-reliant ecosystems.
Guided by Amrita’s Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, and inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030, the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures (ASF) conducts research and provides training that engages in participatory initiatives to foster social and environmental inclusivity and economic equity for rural communities in India.
Key Features
The Chair addresses the Global Education 2030 Agenda with a distinct emphasis on Education that transforms life, building knowledge societies and thereby leveraging science and innovation for a sustainable future. The Chair will facilitate the development and implementation of a global curriculum, applicable to fourteen selected UN SDGs through an experiential learning framework that will enable a deeper understanding of challenges faced by members of remote communities, and better designing of sustainable solutions in collaboration with them.
The UNESCO Chair and the Center for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality at Amrita focus on 6 key areas such as security, skill-development, social and cultural environment, health and sanitation, climate change and disaster risks incorporating all UNSDGs by utilising science and technology for designing innovative methods and tools, enabling community’s active and inclusive participation in implementing technological solutions, thereby delivering effective interventional strategies towards strengthening gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Amrita has very resourceful professors that are highly trained and deliver their lectures with a high sense of compassion. The sustainable development Ph.D. program courses have exceeded my expectation in terms of wide course coverage and the knowledge will be highly relevant for field implementation to solve everyday environmental issues. The program has provided me with an opportunity to see everyday problems and to offer relevant solutions. The university workshops and colloquium are super and well organised.
I have learned an extraordinary amount and managed remote learning better than expected. Taking this program has transformed my thinking and life. I feel very privileged to be in the program.
The Ph.D. in sustainable development at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has a dual component with potential for global impact. In addition to an interdisciplinary academic focus, it combines extensive fieldwork to design sustainable interventions for specific communities in a broad array of sustainability domains. Our international cohort of scholars from several different countries suggests that these interventions can be taken to different regions.
