Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi has said that increasing complexities of life in the modern era warrant a “revolution of the internal self” in order to shed selfishness and kindle the spirit of service. Delivering the customary address at her 60th birthday celebrations at Amritapuri, the Mata exhorted people, especially the youth, to eschew ostentation and work for the welfare of society. Rein in your desires if you desire happiness. Sadness is ephemeral, ameliorate it.

The math also echoed Gandhi's principle of developing villages by launching 101 self-reliant model villages across the country as part of Amma's birthday celebrations. These villages will be developed with stress on nine core areas. The 101-village adoption programme was launched by Union minister for transport Oscar Fernandes and the Rs 50 crore Uttarakhand relief and rehabilitation scheme was launched by Union minister of state for labour Kodikunnil Suresh.
All roads led to Amritapuri, as lakhs of people flowed into the sprawling venue alongside the backwaters of scenic Vallikavu village here, to attend the Amritavarsham 60.
The ‘Amrita RITE-Rural India Tablet Education’, a program designed for after-school tutoring and adult literacy among the rural folk with the use of custom developed tablet computers, was unveiled on the occasion the 60th birthday celebrations of Mata Amritanandamayi at Amritapuri. Amrita CREATE, the education-technology research lab of Amrita University, provides tablet-based, technology-driven education in remote villages areas through this rural educational program.
