Amrita Doctor’s Book on COVID-19 Receives Global Acclaim

Amrita School of Medicine Associate Professor and Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist, Dr. Tinku K. Joseph had put together a book that provided all essential details on the COVID-19, novel coronavirus disease. Titled ‘International Pulmonary consensus on COVID-19’ was released on March 14, 2020 and provides substantial information on treatment and preventive strategies on COVID-19 for all health care professionals.

Amrita Doctor on How Social Distancing and Lockdown Remains Key to Prevent Corona Virus Spread

A team of Pathologists and Hospital Administrations Experts, in a study based on the present situation have said that nearly 63% of people among the Kerala population will be totally safe if they adhere to social distancing and ‘break the chain’ initiatives. They based the analysis on a formula to calculate effective contact cases, which is the key identified reason for spread of coronavirus. “We were looking at the burden on the hospital infrastructure vis-à-vis social distancing based on a mathematical calculation. The effective contact cases is calculated by multiplying transmissibility into the average number of exposed people,” said Dr. Dinesh Nair, Head of Department of Hospital Administration, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (AIMS), Kochi.

Shreya Siddanagowda, transplanted hands now match her skin tone, mystifying the doctors who performed the 13-hour procedure. The procedure was done by a team of doctors led by Dr. Subramania Iyer K., Head of Department, Department of Head & Neck Surgery, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi and it was the first upper double-arm transplant in all of Asia. Dr. Iyer revealed that the color of Shreya’s hands quickly began to show a lot of change. “It could be because of MSH, a brain-controlled hormone that stimulates melanin production. We are wondering if MSH levels can really influence the skin color," he said.

Free Telemedicine Consultations at Amrita Hospital during COVID-19 Crisis

During the COVID-19 crisis, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, has been providing free telemedicine consultations for patients, including all super specialities and broad specialties. Over 3000 patients were provided telemedicine consultations for free in a week.
