Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham to Launch Environmental Information System (Envis) Center

The Center for Sustainable Future at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus, has been selected by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to set up an Environmental Information System (Envis) Center on invasive alien species. The center would collect, document and disseminate information on invasive species threatening the biodiversity of the region and other parts of the country. It would also conduct extension activities such as involving local communities to make value-added products using invasive plant species, said representatives of the centre.

Amrita Provides Training to Coimbatore's Tribals in Crafting Furniture Using Lantana

More than 100 tribals from the hamlets of Singampathy, Kalkothipathi and Sarkarporathy in Siruvani have been trained in Lantana furniture-making. The project was jointly funded by the Centre for Sustainable Future of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore and Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) of the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), India. “The idea is to bring about an economic development to these people who live deep inside the jungle. We started the project three years ago and continuous attempts were made to give it a systematic approach. Later, it was funded through GSDP, which helped regularise things,” said Maya Mahajan, Associate Professor, Centre for Sustainable Future of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and Coordinator of the project.

Amrita Faculty Conducts Course for Tribal People in Making Furniture from Invasive Species

Amrita faculty member Maya Mahajan conducted a course for tribal people in making furniture from invasive species. The 75-day course had two parts, a 15-day theory component and a 60-day practical component, said Maya Mahajan, Associate Professor at the Centre for Sustainable Future, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore campus. The first batch which completed the course, offered under the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, received certificates on March 19, 2019, at the settlement.

Dr. Maya Mahajan, Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science, School of Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore Campus, received Kovai Wonder Woman Award 2019 from The Indian Express and Kovai Wonder Women groups for her contribution towards society and the environment.
