World Bioethics Day 2023 – Protecting Future Generations

The Bioethics SAARC Nodal Centre at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi is excited to announce the celebration of World Bioethics Day on the 6th and 7th of October 2023. This year’s theme, ‘Protecting Future Generations,’ draws inspiration from Article 16 of the UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (UDBHR) 2005. The focus is on creating a multidimensional environment that ensures the physical, mental, psychological, social, and moral health of future generations.

One of the most pressing issues threatening the prosperity of future generations is the environmental crisis. Therefore, addressing this challenge involves taking concrete steps to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, conserve natural resources, and develop sustainable technologies.

Education plays a pivotal role in shaping the future, and ensuring access to quality education is vital. This includes not only imparting academic knowledge but also fostering practical skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. By equipping future generations with the necessary tools and knowledge, we empower them to make informed decisions and contribute to society positively.

In the pursuit of safeguarding their well-being, providing access to quality healthcare is crucial. The emphasis here is not solely on physical health but also on mental well-being.

Economic security is another essential aspect of promoting the welfare of future generations. This involves creating opportunities for good jobs, ensuring access to affordable housing, and establishing robust social safety nets.

Moreover, social justice plays a vital role in ensuring equal access to opportunities and essential resources. By addressing issues like racism, inequality, and discrimination, we can build a more inclusive society where every individual has a fair chance to thrive.

Therefore, the  celebration of  World Bioethics Day 2023 serves as a global platform to renew our commitment to protect future generations. By addressing environmental challenges, providing quality education, healthcare, economic security, and fostering social justice, we take decisive steps towards creating a brighter and more sustainable future for generations yet to come.
