From the academic year 2013 – 2014, Department of Mass Communication offers Ph. D. program in Print Media, Broadcast Media, New Media, Film Studies, Integrated Marketing Communication, Advertising.

The Department of Communication under the School of Arts, Humanities, and Commerce is at the forefront of contemporary communication research that blends communication research with strong inter-disciplinary approach. The school aims at providing tangible and groundbreaking communication solutions in diverse areas that transcends boundaries and our program is designed for scholars aiming to explore the evolving landscape of media with an interdisciplinary framework.
We take pride in the inter-disciplinary excellence that we bring to the table with our research specializations spanning a wide arena covering sociology, culture studies, broadcast and traditional media research, new media research, marketing, journalism, gender studies, inclusivity studies, pop-culture, Indian music and knowledge systems, media management, advertising, sustainability studies, film studies, design, e-governance, and health and development communication, among others. We specialize in providing communication solutions for government and corporate organizations. We have also undertaken projects associated with documentation of indigenous culture and knowledge systems.
Our experienced faculty have diverse specialization and research interests combined with unique industry perspective, and encourages impactful research, innovation, and critical thinking. Each stage of the research is evaluated by a doctoral committee comprising of expert academicians from various academic/ research institutions, from India and abroad. Quality research publications in reputed international journals are a mandatory and essential requirement for the completion of the PhD programme. Scholars also get to access an ever-expanding repository of e-resources. Originality in research is strictly monitored through anti-plagiarism software. Scholars are meticulously trained in software assisted qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. The research process is streamlined with international partnerships, regular research seminars and workshops.

Applicants should show evidence of strong academic record. Excellent test scores on standardized graduate aptitude tests such as GATE or GRE, and publications in recognized conferences and journals are examples of such evidence.

We undertake students from the areas of Film Studies, Development COmmunication, Marketing research, development communication, health communication, e-goverance, Broadcast media, new media, social media research, among others. But currently all guides are full as we have only 3 supervisors. The maximum we can take at this moment is 1 scholar.
Dr. A. Balasubramanian has completed a funded project entitled ‘Documentation of the lifestyle of the Irula tribe in Gudular, Nilgiri District, Tamil Nadu with an emphasis on socio-economic development of the community’ funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST) under ‘Natural Resources Data Management System’ (NRDMS) with a rant of Rs. 15.95 lakhs. This project is a pursuit to visual document of the Irula tribes’ problems, the resources identification and steps to be taken to develop cultural, economic, and social well-being of the community through proper education. He is also an Associate Editor in International Journal of Instruction, Technology and Social Sciences and served as a Reviewer for Journals, Conferences and Swayam course on Photojournalism.
Dr. Kalyani Suresh was chosen as the Best Professor Teaching Advertising Management by ABP News for the National B-School Awards 2013, and is the recipient of the Indira Parikh 50 Women in Education Leaders award, 2019.
Faculty members from the Department of Mass Communication have published research articles in Scopus and Web of Science indexed journals.
Department of Mass Communication have produced two PhD candidates and more than 12 scholars are pursuing their PhD. PhD Scholar Ms. Neethu Parvathy’s paper “Rituals that Bond and Rituals that Divide: Evidence from a Tribal Society in India‟ has been accepted for publication in the American Sociological Association Conference 2020 . She was awarded an ICSSR fellowship with a grant of Rs 70,000/-
