Doctoral programs at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (AVVP) are designed to develop outstanding educational researchers with a wide range of research skills as well as in-depth knowledge and practical understanding and expertise in their chosen field of educational research. The Health Sciences Research (HSR) Department of the Amrita School of Medicine (ASM), Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (AIMS) at the Amrita Health Campus, Kochin take care of the Ph. D. program.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Medical and Health Sciences program is offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences and is administered by the Department of Health Sciences Research, ASM, Kochi Campus, headed by , Dr DM Vasudevan Dean ( Research) & Chairman (Post Graduate Program and Research ). Doctorate (Ph.D) program of Amrita School of Medicine, Amrita School of Dentistry, and Amrita Center for Allied Health Sciences are governed by the Department.
The program includes course work and research. The credit requirement for the course work is based on the Academic background and years of regular academic activity. As per the University norms, one credit is considered as 15 hours of class. Three courses, totaling 7 credits are compulsory for all the Ph D scholars and these courses shall be offered by the Dept of Health Sciences Research at ASM in Kochin campus. Rest of the credit/ Course requirement are developed and decided by the Doctoral Committee and Thesis Advisor taking into consideration the academic background and research topic of the Scholar.
The thrust areas include all disciplines of Medical, Dental and Health Sciences.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has not appointed any agent or third-party representative within India for admissions to any programme. Students residing in India are advised not to make payments or seat reservation advances to any individual or organization claiming to offer admission assistance for Amrita campuses.
For international admissions, the University may work with authorized overseas representatives in select countries. International applicants are advised to verify the credentials of such representatives through official Amrita communication channels before proceeding with applications or payments.

Applicants holding Master’s degree are eligible for admission viz., M.Sc., MSW, MD, MS, DNB, MDS, M.Pharm, Pharm.D, 2 yr PG Diploma, MS by research and M.Phil. All applicants are expected to have strong academic records.

Admissions to Ph. D. programs are conducted twice a year, for January and July sessions. A Ph.D. program is offered in two modes- Full time and Part time and not in a distance learning mode. Hence, coursework, participation in various interactions, submission of progress reports through presentations etc. on regular basis is mandatory during the program. A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official / employment obligations.
Hence, Part time Candidates are expected to ensure they get adequate organisational help and a relevant setup at their workplace that also enables them to engage in research work. The duration of Ph.D. full time is for a minimum of 3 years and Ph.D. part time for a minimum of 5 years. Maximum duration in the case of full time is 6 years and part time is 8 years. AVVP encourages interdisciplinary research and exchange of ideas and knowledge in various related fields. Part time student need to have 6 months’ residency at ASM before submission of the thesis.
The main Guide/Thesis Advisor for the scholar during the Ph.D. program will be from Amrita School of Medicine (ASM) Kochin Campus, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham AVVP, appointed as per the research topic, rules regulation and Guide availability. Consequently, it allows appointment of Co-Guide/Co-Advisors from outside AVVP as per university rules, as decided by the Thesis advisor/Doctoral Committee. It is the responsibility of the scholar to get in touch with the Faculty members of ASM, AVVP and attach his/her willingness letter to undertake the responsibility of guiding the scholar in the research topic, a requisite for issuing and accepting the PhD application. This letter has to be enclosed during submission of the duly filled in application form and subsequent acceptance. The Doctoral Committee of the scholar shall have a minimum of 4 and maximum 5 Faculty members including the Guide and Co-Guide. One of the members should be an international expert from outside the country, who is a renowned Faculty in the topic of research.
