Abstract : Overall enhancement for poorly illuminated satellite images (remote sensing images) and similar dark images (from other domain) is always a very challenging task where information is inherited in a very dense manner. In general, conventional intensity-based enhancement approaches usually suffered with insufficient colorfulness as well as saturation artifacts, and hence, never leads to desired overall enhancement as such. This article presents a novel gamma correction strategy, where the gamma value-set itself has been derived from optimally compressed and equalized intensity profile achieved with proper saturation restoration. The simulation results authenticate the overall enhancement (contrast as well as entropy enhancement along with sharpness enhancement) achieved by the proposed has been found superior to other dark image enhancement techniques.
