Bio

Dr. Latha Nair is currently working as a Professor in the Department of English, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi Campus. She also designed “Popular Culture & The Art of Review Writing” A Certificate Course and The Write Way – A Creative Writing Course for Beginners A Certificate Course. She has been honoured by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore as a Mentee Professor for her contributions towards quality enhancement at higher education spaces.

A consummate educator and academic researcher, Dr. Nair has been a stalwart of the Department of English and Centre for Research at St Teresa’s College (Autonomous), which is one of the premiere institutions in India, accredited in the Fourth Cycle of Accreditation with 5.57 C.G.P.A and ranked 47th in the NIRF at All India Level. Since she began her tenure in 1990, her vivacity, love for learning, and absolute dedication to the vocation of higher education have made her a beloved mentor to the generations of students who have graduated from the English programmes at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral levels. She was the Head of Department, Associate Professor and Dean of Research at St. Teresa’s College, Kochi.

She was the NAAC coordinator for the Fourth Cycle of Accreditation and had played a lead role as steering Committee Member for all the Four Cycles of Accreditation. Dr. Nair was appointed as the Director of the Gunn Centre in India, after she undertook a training program at the State Kansas University, USA. She played a lead role in facilitating the autonomous status of St. Teresa’s College. She is also a member of the Governing Council of St. Teresa’s College, Member Board of Studies, Sree Sankaracharya University, Kalady. She is the Resource Person for the Staff Academic Training Colleges (UGC) of Bharathiar University, Bharathi Dasan and Calicut University. She is also the coordinator and animator of WISCOMP (Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace), an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility) by His Holiness Dalai Lama. She was a part of the WISCOMP Gender Audit Project HAMSA, which drafted the first policy document for Gender Audit, supported by the U.S. Consulate.

She was also nominated to TATA Pilgrims Society and serves as an Executive Member for Sir Dorabji TATA Trust Hospital at Chottanikkara. She played a lead role in facilitating a free Cancer Detection & Research Centre at the hospital by signing an MOU with Karkinos and TATA Hospital Mumbai, for the people of Kerala, especially for the poorest of the poor. The first Community Radio Station in Kochi, Radio Kochi 90FM was her brainchild and it is her persistent efforts that lead to the inception of the station, under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in 2021.

Dr. Nair was recently honoured with the Saahas Prerna Award. It was conferred upon her by WISCOMP, an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility, New Delhi that focuses on women’s agency in public and policy spaces and works to facilitate their informed articulation and leadership across South Asia. WISCOMP’s work foregrounds the interface of gender with issues of representation, democracy, foreign policy, and peacebuilding.

Dr. Nair was honoured with this award for consistently providing psycho-social support for the emotional well-being of students and countering Gender-Based Violence and Substance Abuse. The award honoured her health and financial outreach for the differently Abled and LGBTQI communities. It also commended her dissemination of best practices on gender justice to partner institutes, networks, and organizations, especially in the media and not-for-profit sectors. She is also a Research Consultant, and an Executive Member for Project Venda, of Fourth Wave Foundation an NGO for protecting children against the menace of Substance Abuse and Dhisha an NGO for Protecting the Rights of the marginalised. Her Latest Project is Legal Literacy for Marginalised Groups and Women which is supported by Kerala Youth Commission and Dhisha. A legal Literacy Course for Young Women was designed and initiated in 2020, jointly by Dr. Nair and Disha for empowering young women to fight against all forms of violence.

Her areas of interests include Science Fiction, promoting sustainable education in villages, literacy, integrated humanism, curriculum design, language & linguistics, postmodernism and emotional content in teaching and training community relation officers. Dr. Nair’s   research project on Emotional Content in Democratic Policing focuses on enhancing the emotional and social intelligence of the Police officers that would bring sustainable transformation in community policing. She has also designed job ready Undergraduate Programme on Applied Media Studies under B. Voc. and B.Sc. in Apparel & Fashion Designing which are transdisciplinary.

Research Collaborations

2015 A new social initiative in collaboration with Fourth Wave foundation (NGO) to Keep Kids away from Drugs was launched in 2015 with the support of the Narcotic Cell. A proposal was submitted to the UN for funds. The Project is a part of an ethnographic research which was spearheaded by the Research Team. A structured Skill development programme has been launched to keep kids away from Drugs
Funding of Rs. 2 Lakhs was sanctioned for an ongoing Training Programme for CROs / Beat Police Officers / Asst. Beat Officers of Janamaithry Suraksha Project, Kerala. The First phase of training was on Emotional Content in Democratic Policing with special emphasis on language use and social intelligence. This is an ongoing research initiative in collaboration with Kerala Police. .
