The collaborative dual-degree program offered by SUNY at Buffalo and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has taken great strides over the last few years. The joint effort began in 2005 when we began to conceptualize the dual degree idea and several individuals from both the institutions as well as the IT industry contributed enormously to this effort. The program took shape with a strong partnership with HP and the first class of the dual degree began in 2007. At that time, the students earned a MS in Management of IT Services (MITS) from SUNY at Buffalo and an MS in Management Information Systems (MIS) from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. There were two cohorts in 2007, both at the executive level, comprising of students working at leading IT businesses in Bangalore such as HP, IBM, Nokia, Oracle, Cisco and many others. This class graduated in February 2009, heralding the arrival of our program and showing the way to continued success. The class of 2008 also had two cohorts at the executive level, similar to 2007. In 2009, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham took a big step forward in two ways. First, they began to offer an MBA degree instead of their MS. The MBA is a 2-year program unlike the 1.5 – year MS program. Second, besides the executive class, they started a regular full-time class. Both classes were offered the dual-degrees from the two respective institutions. Now, we are onto our class of 2010 that is just commencing, and the march is on!

The dual-degree program is unique in so many ways. Six of the 11courses required for the MS in MITS degree are taught by Professors from SUNY at Buffalo who fly into Bangalore to conduct classes. The other courses are taught by Amrita faculty. All the courses emphasize the knowledge of different management skills such as finance, marketing, international business and law etc., different domains of knowledge such as IT and healthcare to name a few, a variety of methodological skills such as IT project management, systems analysis and design, contract development and basic functional management methodologies such as the techniques of accounting, statistics, field studies, surveys and many more. Besides these skills, we also strongly emphasize soft skills communication, teamwork, negotiation and people management as essential and equally important with the other skills. We develop our students to be outstanding in these skills; they will definitely be well equipped to face the challenges in the modern world of business. Our corporate partners have also played crucial roles in our efforts to bring a first-rate program that would produce top-notch talent for both the Indian and worldwide industry. Especially, corporations such as HP, Motorola, Oracle, 24×7, Symphony and many others have supported our educational enterprise in so many ways. Their participation in our student recruitment, classroom education, internships, placement and many other facets of our enterprise has been vital. This also grounds the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom in real practices out there in the field, making our students not only capable of solving real world problems but also very strong managers of organizations, people and technologies.
