Human beings can easily create structures joined together using basic geometric shapes and optimize them for obtaining some mechanical or optical performance. But such optima may not be the best optima. Often the optimizations can proceed further if the constraints of using only the familiar shapes are removed. Such optimization problems for irregular geometries may be better handled by machines rather than by humans. Here, methods to optimize devices or even predict device designs which does better than the current photonic devices will be explored.
