Infrastructural systems are designed to remain functional for 50 to 100 years. However, the said period depends on the building’s maintenance and upkeep. With time buildings will show signs of distress, during which the decision to retrofit/replace the building has to be taken. Typically, the replacement of a building is expensive. Alternatively, the timely retrofit would lead to substantial savings by extending the life of the buildings. Structural health monitoring plays a vital role in quantifying the state of the building. Each building is unique, and the methodology to predict the building state involves several challenges. The research will look to develop reliable methodologies to predict the residual life of buildings and suggest interventions (with minimum cost and delay) to extend the system’s life.
