Gender Equality &
Women Empowerment

THE WORK BEGINS WITH AN
UNDERSTANDING THAT
WOMEN AND MEN ARE OF
EQUAL VALUE.

Grounded in a vision of compassion and love for all, Amrita University’s Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, known as Amma, has spearheaded numerous initiatives for women’s empowerment and gender equality. These efforts are carried out through the Mata Amritanandamayi Math and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Amma envisions that “like the two wings of a bird, women and men are of equal value. Without the two in perfect balance, humanity cannot progress.”

Gender Equality & Women
Empowerment

Born out of Amma’s vision to empower communities for resilience to climate change and disaster relief, Amrita SREE program was launched in 2006, with the goal of aiding 500,000 women through the development of self-help groups. With more than 300,000 women currently participating, it provides vocational education, start-up capital, marketing assistance and access to microcredit loans and microsavings accounts. To provide assistance to people who have been impacted by the pandemic, Amma has rolled out a total of INR 85 crores as Covid-19 aid package. As a part of the second instalment, Amma is currently providing financial assistance, grocery kits and clothes worth 35 crores to the SHG members and to recent flood victims.
