Maneesha V. Ramesh, Real-time Wireless Sensor Network for Landslide Detection Proceedings of the 2009 Third International Conference on Sensor Technologies and Applications, July 2009.
Abstract : Wireless sensor networks is an emerging area that has equipped scientists with the capability to develop real-time monitoring systems. This paper discusses the development of a wireless sensor network to detect landslides, and includes the design, development and implementation of such a network for real time monitoring, the development of the algorithms needed that enable efficient data collection and data aggregation and the network requirements of a deployed landslide detection system.

Abstract : The installation or deployment of a wireless sensor network (WSN) in a real world application is prone to innumerable failures such as software or hardware malfunctioning, environmental hazards, radio interference, battery exhaustion, etc. In a safety critical application such as landslide prediction, fault tolerant approaches have to be followed to ensure the availability of sensor data at the analysis station during a critical situation.

Abstract : Landslides are environmental disasters that cause massive destruction of human life and infrastructure. Real time monitoring of a landslide-prone area is necessary to issue fore-warning. To accomplish real-time monitoring, massive amount of data has to be collected and analyzed within a short span of time. This work has developed a method for effective data collection and aggregation by implementing threshold alert levels.

Abstract : This paper presents a novel method of relaying data collected in a directed network towards a sink node. The data is dynamically correlated as the data messages propagate towards the sink node through the network. By simple mathematical means, the “strength” of the data can be increased or decreased based on its correlation with other encountered data sets.

Abstract : Real time wireless sensor networks are primarily constrained by the availability of energy for a long monitoring period. Either new methodologies for acquiring energy or new methodologies for efficient energy utilization have to be adopted. This paper analyzes the energy consumed by the entire network and discusses the factors and approaches used towards deriving an optimal topology which minimizes the energy consumption for the whole wireless sensor network.
