Wave of Change: Water for a Sustainable Future

About

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham‘s UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation and Development, International Network for Sustainable Innovation and Resilient Futures (SustIN), and Amrita School for Sustainable Futures (ASF) are proud to co-host a month-long initiative titled “Wave of Change: Water for a Sustainable Future.” This initiative coincides with World Water Day 2024 and aims to raise awareness and inspire action towards achieving water sustainability.

Distinguished Lectures

The initiative features a distinguished lecture series addressing critical water-related topics:

  • Theme 1: Water Security for Peace; Need to Invest in Water for Peace
  • Theme 2: Water Security and Sustainability Enhancement through Education or Capacity-Building
  • Theme 3: Innovative Technologies in Sustainable Water Treatment: AI, IoT, and Citizen Science
  • Theme 4: Safeguarding Public Health: Advanced Treatment Strategies for Drinking Water and Wastewater
  • Theme 5: Marine Biodiversity Conservation and the Blue Economy: Strategies for Coexistence
  • Theme 6: Empowering Coastal Communities: Ensuring Equitable Participation in the Blue Economy
Community-Based Programs

The initiative extends beyond lectures, fostering engagement through community-based programs. These programs aim to build water-wise communities by:

  • Organizing Awareness Sessions: Awareness sessions and activities on crucial topics like water treatment, water pollution, water quality and waterborne diseases, and water conservation.
  • Identifying Water Champions: Community members will be evaluated to identify individuals who can lead in promoting water sustainability methods within their communities.

Empowering Leaders, Inspiring Change

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation and Development, International Network for Sustainable Innovation and Resilient Futures (SustIN), and Amrita School for Sustainable Futures (ASF), is proud to launch a community initiative titled “Building Water-Wise Communities” as part of the “Wave of Change: Water for a Sustainable Future” program. This initiative coincides with World Water Day 2024 and aims to empower community members to participate actively in creating a sustainable water future.

Empowering Through Education

We will be hosting a series of awareness sessions on crucial topics to equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions about water use:

  • Water Treatment: Understand various water treatment methods and their importance in ensuring safe drinking water.
  • Water Pollution: Learn about the causes and consequences of water pollution, and ways to prevent it.
  • Water Quality & Waterborne Diseases: Explore the importance of water quality and the risks associated with contaminated water.
  • Water Conservation: Discover practical strategies for conserving water in your daily life.

Identifying Water Champions

Following the awareness sessions, we will seek passionate individuals who can become our Water Champions. These champions will be instrumental in leading and promoting water conservation practices within their communities.

How to Become a Water Champion

There are multiple ways to be considered for the Water Champion role:

  • Nominated by the community
  • Water challenge: Participation in a community-wide water conservation challenge. Standout participants and team leaders will be considered for the Water Champion role.
  • Community Forum: Participation in an open forum to discuss water issues and potential solutions in your community. Active participation and insightful contributions will be recognized

Selection Criteria

Water Champions will be selected based on a combination of factors:

  • Water Knowledge: A strong understanding of water conservation practices, water sources, and local water challenges.
  • Leadership Potential: Inspiring and motivating others to adopt water-saving practices.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to effectively communicate the importance of water conservation to the community.
  • Community Trust: Being respected and trusted by your fellow community members.
