Bachelor of Physician Associate (PAT) is four-year program including one-year compulsory internship. Physician Assistants work on teams with physicians or surgeons and other healthcare workers. Physician assistants work in all areas of medicine, including primary care and family medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. Physician Assistant specialists are formally trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care services virtually in all medical specialties, as delegated by physician. Working as members of a health care team, they take medical histories, perform physical examination, order and interpret laboratory tests and X-rays and make diagnosis. They also manage minor injuries by suturing, splinting and casting. PAs record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, and order to carry out therapy. Additional nonclinical positions are in the pipeline for physician assistants. Only those who are willing to dedicate themselves for patient care dedicated to strenuous work should opt for this course. PAs can opt in different specialties including Cardiology, CVTS, Head & Neck and Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, GI Surgery, Endocrinology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Gynaec Oncology, General Medicine and Pediatrics.
The opportunities and prospects offered by this course is tremendous in our country. Apart from working as PA, they get placements in medical software institutions, pharmaceutical industry and organizations developing and marketing sophisticated medical devices, medical tourism, and medical insurance. They can be appointed as coordinators for various clinical trials. Abroad they can work as medical technologists, scientists, cardiac technologists, case managers, and research assistants.

Clinical year/Internship where the students will do six months of internship in primary care and six months in specialty care of their choice. They will also have to submit a research thesis (worked upon from the preceding semesters to successfully complete the BS programme. The students will be provided adequate compensation for living expenses as stipend by the training institute for the entire period of the clinical year.

For all specialties, selection for candidates will be based on the rank obtained in the Amrita Entrance Examination. Allotment of seats for the shortlisted candidate will be based on the performance in the counseling/interview.
Out of total seats for all specialties, 50% seats will be allotted to the Merit category and 50% to the management category including NRI i.e. 15% of seats.
Candidates applying through agents/education counsellors using fraudulent means/ bribery/donations will be debarred to secure admission in any of the courses in Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
