The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has declared Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham as a Center of Excellence in Tribal Empowerment (Tribal CoE). This multidisciplinary center has faculty expertise from various Amrita departments.

The Digital & Health Literacy – Promoting Health & Wellbeing program was developed by Amrita Center for Research in Analytics, Technologies & Education (AmritaCREATE) and aligned with Digital India.

This project gives basic computer awareness to tribal people. The program provides hands-on knowledge on how to operate a computer and perform simple operations such as browsing the Internet, creating a word or excel file as well as more advanced operations such as filling an online application or booking online train tickets. The program targets tribal populations in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Program objectives: 

  • Empower tribal youth, through computer education
  • Increase digital literacy within the tribal communities

Geographical area

The project was conducted in the following areas: 

  • Jatani Block, Khurda District & Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi District of Orissa,
  • Malarna Dungar Block, Sawai Madhopur District, Rajasthan

Target Group: 

  • Tribal school students, rural youth

Main program activities

The program employed application oriented awareness training in computers using animation, and included the following components:

  • Introduction to computers.
  • The Use of Input and Output devices.
  • The Use of an Operating System.
  • Introduction to Word and Excel software. 
  • Familiarization with Internet Banking and Booking.
