Abstract : To benefit of humankind, radiation is used in medicine, industry, and academics, as well as for generating electricity. Neutron radiation is a kind of ionisation emission that releases free neutrons which causes a severe impact when exposed to the external environment. So, it is essential to shield neutron radiation from any nuclear facility to create a hassle-free environment. Studies associated with the safety of such nuclear civil structures proved that concrete is very effective in neutron shielding. But still, it possesses some significant drawbacks in terms of strength, durability and attenuation performance. Hence, the researchers focused on improving the neutron shielding capacity of concrete by using various alternate additives as a constituent of Radiation Shielding Concrete (RSC) which enhances the efficiency, durability, and affordability. This paper presents an extensive state-of-the-art review on the usage of various additives for enhancing the neutron attenuation capacity of concrete. A brief explanation about the type of radiation, neutron rays and importance of neutron shielding is also presented. Apart from this, an overview of various testing methods and procedures adopted to find the neutron attenuation coefficient is also discussed and compared in this paper.
