Abstract :
Agriculture is the backbone of modern India. Despite of being one of the leading producers of fruits and vegetables, the crop loss is increasing gradually in India. This is mainly due to the post production difficulties and the inefficiency of the cold storage units. Potato is the fourth largest produced crop in India and widely consumed all over the world. In this paper we provide a solution to monitor and maintain the healthy environmental conditions inside a cold storage unit specifically for the potato crop by developing a prototype model. This is done by continuously monitoring the required characteristics i.e., checking the suitable threshold range and updating the situation to the owner by sending SMS using GSM. The prototype model developed provides less error of about 1% and the system developed is capable of monitoring the conditions of temperature, humidity, light intensity and the detection of the rotting of potatoes in the early stage. © 2017 IEEE.
