Abstract :

Rapid industrial expansions in recent years have triggered the proliferation of diverse sensitive loads on electrical power networks. Fragile, delicate loads require their stipulated power fed in, without excessive perturbations in the input voltage. These loads are vulnerable to even minor voltage variations, degrading performance with undesirable repercussions. Susceptibility of delicate loads is apparent, when they are deployed in life-critical support systems, besides the need for information assurance in cyber physical systems. Series active filters are one of the expedient measures to bolster the resilience of the sensitive loads to voltage deviations. This paper proffers a novel technique for the monitoring and control of active filters. Performance analysis of prototype versions of the proposed Fundamental Voltage Peak Detection (FVPD) controller, for series active filters, was compared against conventional control mechanisms. Supplemental experimentation and results of simulation, with MATLAB Simulink platform, re-affirmed the superior performance of the FVPD algorithm over the extant control algorithms, under varying system operational conditions.
