Abstract : Permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) are slowly replacing induction machines from the domain of variable speed drives owing to its high torque /weight ratio, power density and efficiency. In this paper, an analysis over surface mount permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) is carried out with respect to the performance indices of torque ripple and power factor at different rated speeds. As surface mount synchronous machine is not a self-starting machine, v/f closed loop control strategy is implemented to start the machine from standstill to rated speed, then switched to back EMF based sensor-less field oriented control (FOC) for its continuous run. In further simulation and analysis of performance indices over SPMSM is carried out for different rated speed in MATLAB - Simulink platform.
