Abstract : Increased use of power electronic converters at various stages of power system is the main cause of harmonics and reactive power. Presence of harmonics adds pollution to the power system or degrades the quality of power. A series active power filter is used to reduce the harmonics and also compensate reactive power. This paper explores the use of a Kalman filter based neural network controller for enhancing the operation of a three phase series active power filter which is connected at the input of a non-linear load. The entire experiment has been conducted in MATLAB/Simulink environment. It is observed that there is substantial reduction in harmonics with this proposed control scheme. The three phase total harmonic distortion in the non-linear load circuit has been reduced from 33.63% to 2.61%.
