Abstract : Resazurin (alamarBlue®) based assay was considered as a quick tool to monitor biological activity and was preferred over Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) assay which generally takes 3-5 days of incubation. It was designed to quantitatively measure cell viability and was based on the biological reduction of fluorometric redox indicator resazurin (purple) to resorufin (pink) which was generally performed for aerobic organisms. In our study on wastewater biological activity, we observed that resazurin can be used as an indicator of anaerobic respiration as well. Thus, resazurin based fluorometric assays can be widely used as an effective tool for the monitoring the sewage wastewaters.
