Abstract : Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors are being adopted in industries due to the demand for machines with increased power density. Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM) is commonly used for constant speed applications in the place of Induction Motor. But LSPMSM tends to undergo a variety of faults during run-time. Electrical faults contribute heavily to the total percentage of faults. In this paper, stator turn-to-turn short-circuit fault has been simulated in an LSPMSM using Finite Element Method (FEM) and its effects on various analytical and electromagnetic parameters of the machine has been analyzed. The analysis has been carried out using signal processing. Finally, Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) is chosen as a potential fault detector for the type of fault considered.
