Abstract : Carbon dots (CDs), otherwise known as carbon quantum dots, are the latest members added to the family of carbon nanomaterials, which are majorly made up of sp2/sp3 carbons measuring <10 nm in size. In light of the attractive features offered by CDs, research work reported based on CDs have remarkably grown in the last few years. In this chapter an overview of the recent advancements made toward the applications of various top-down methods in synthesizing CDs with targeted applications has been provided. The top-down route for synthesizing CDs includes arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical etching, chemical oxidation, and ball milling methods. Significant breakthroughs made in the last several years, major setbacks experienced, and challenges faced during the implementation of the top-down processes toward developing CDs are discussed here in detail.
