Bio

Prof. Ramana has over 41 years of experience combining 15 years of industry experience filled with micro, macro and global assignments involved in rural development and 26 years of management teaching and research across a range of higher educational institutions in India and abroad. His experience may be summed up in three distinct domains: the first, rural grassroot level institution building; creation and managing market linkages for rural producers organisations and building a basis for social theorisation; the second, developing basic skills and competencies in the art and craft of teaching and relating management studies to the practices and principles as they emerge; and thirdly, in creating frameworks and approaches for management processes based on field action – otherwise known as Action-Innovation-Research (AIR).

These three domains are not silos and compartmentalised; his work helped him evolve in each of these areas while working on challenges as a rural manager and as a teacher and researcher and practitioner, over the last four decades. He started working with rural institutional development by involving in organising milk cooperatives across Punjab, Gujarat, Odisha and AP under Operation Flood II; worked with oilseeds cooperatives in pioneering groundnut procurement in Gujarat, MP, Odisha, Karnataka and AP; operationalised Pan-India Management Information System for oilseeds cooperatives, building a robust year-round monitoring system, while associated with Operation Golden Flow, between 1980-1984. Thereafter worked for creating a resilient cooperative law and was instrumental in developing a framework for mutually aided cooperatives societies law, which has been implemented in many states thereafter. Developed institutional processes based on cooperative principles for the tree growers’ cooperatives across the country and their national level federal cooperative, within the ambit of multi-state cooperative law, created market linkages for minor forest products and for minor timber products within the country and developed vertical integration systems for processing and marketing of forest products coming from these cooperatives. Building institutional models for commons and learning the social theorisation processes of commons, working with global researchers on commons unfolded in a practice-to-theory framework in real-time. Working with Global Development Institutions such as Cooperative League of USA (CLUSA), Cooperative Union of Canada (CUC), Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), National Wastelands Development Board (NWDB) and various other Cooperative Development Organisations (CDOs) at policy level, planning level, operations at national, state and village levels, in order to build resilient and responsive people’s organisations that evolved into economic institutions and social enterprises in the later years.

The experiences of working on a range of farmers’ products and rural market systems led to concurrently building insights into and developing marketing infrastructure and supply chains for feeding the market demand. These insights helped performing as a teacher in higher education domains, both in business management and in rural management as well. His roles in leadership positions and in researcher positions intertwine with his passion and involvement in teaching strategy, supply chain management, business communication, rural marketing, marketing research and in integrated marketing communication, among other subject domains.

Dr. Ramana worked with higher educational institutions in creating and sustaining higher education portals that are responsive, meaningful and value adding to all the stakeholders of the institutions. Predominantly working with post graduate programs in management, designing and developing exclusive programs devoted to rural management, supply chain management and logistics, international business and rural marketing, while evolving the institutional tenets as respectable educational institutions – in India and in Vietnam, shaping programs that are in tune with the industry demands during these 26 years. He was involved with the initial formative years of Amrita Institute of Management, Ettimadai, CII Institute of Logistics, Chennai, XIMB, Pioneer School of Management, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, KIIT School of Rural Management, Bhubaneshwar, AICAR Business School, Mumbai, TA Pai Management Institute, Manipal (TAPMI), XIME, Bengaluru, Symbiosis School of Media and Communication, Bengaluru, Chandragupt Institute of Management, Patna, and Indus Business Academy, Bengaluru before taking up teaching and research responsibilities at Amaravati ASB.

Qualification

Doctorate

Prof. Ramana did his doctoral research from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, during 2000-2006 in the area of assessing the impact of globalisation on Indian Rural Enterprises, and mapped the early years of globalisation of Indian economy and its emergent impact on five distinct rural enterprises – in the areas of agriculture, forestry, water resources and fisheries. The emergence of technology as a game changer in globalisation processes was acknowledged in their nascent state, as early as the first few years of 21st century, which in the later years helped the globalisation processes to be irreversible. His research contribution in this area helped develop multiple institutional alternatives for rural producers, and in creating supply chains that were serviced by such nano institutions as women’s self-help groups, social enterprises that inbuilt profit into social outcomes and paved way for micro aggregators at village level in the backdrop.

Post – Graduation

Prof Ramana did his post-graduation during 1980-82 from the Institute of Rural Management, Anand, (IRMA), graduated from the first batch of the institution, pioneering a profession that has ingrained professional skills with conscious focus on Indian rural producing community – both in farm and non-farm professions of rural India. While 1980s did not have a clear distinction on what management professional specialisations could emerge in the coming years, choosing to specialise in MIS, Cooperative Development and Rural Marketing as his areas of interest helped him to create pan-India MIS for milk cooperatives, oilseeds cooperatives and multi-purpose cooperatives that chose the path of vertical integration, in a meaningful way, to become role models for subsequent IT driven MIS across these domains.

Graduation

Prof. Ramana graduated from Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University (APAU, Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad) as it existed in that era, with a Bachelors in Agricultural Sciences 1976-80. While the four years program did not specifically have specialisations, Ramana chose to learn Agricultural Extension, Agri-entomology and Agricultural Bio-chemistry as his chosen fields of interest, which resulted in his publishing his first research article in 1979-80, along with few other co-student researchers, on a rice pest-vector.
