Amrita CEN releases 3rd Edition of Insight into Wavelets from Theory to Practice book

Amrita Center for Excellence in Computational and Networking (CEN) released the 8th print of third edition of the book Insight into Wavelets series on October 2013.

Authored by Dr. K. P. Soman, Dr. Ramachandran K. I. and Resmi N. G. of Amrita CEN, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore Campus, the book was published by PHI Learning Private Limited, New Delhi.

The book discussed the wavelets design theoretical explanations and practical as well. The edition included 18 chapters, covered most of the applications in signal processing, image processing and computer graphics.

Wavelet is a wave like oscillation with amplitude that begins at zero, increases and then decreases back to zero. A set of wavelets are generally needed to analyze data fully. They will decompose data without gaps or overlap so that the decomposition process is mathematically reversible; therefore very useful to recover the original information with minimal loss.

The authors shared some – fine points of the book.

“The book insight into wavelets is a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of wavelet design and its applications. It is one of the most powerful tools used today in signal and image processing. The book covers design aspects of all the important types of wavelets in a manner understandable to undergraduate students of science and Engineering,” they underlined.

As a mathematical tool, wavelets can be used to extract information from any kinds of data including audio signals and images. Wavelet theory is applicable to several subjects in the field of engineering, computer science, research and communication.

“Most of the books in wavelet theory were written by Mathematicians and the rigor of the mathematics in the design procedure was the toughest work for Engineers. Our book developed the theory with lots of geometrical interpretations to every aspect of the theory and the results,” further shared the team.

“The lucid introduction to the subject enabled readers to understand the subject with in few days and then go on to capture the essence of advanced level books on the subject. This made the book dear teachers and students who wanted to make their first step to this exciting and ever-growing field with applications in areas ranging from Astrophysics to Zoology,” they added.

The book has undergone three editions in 8 years. There are more than 400 books on the topic, in India; this is the most preferred book among teachers, students and researchers. Almost all Indian universities and top other autonomous technical institutions like IIT Bombay, IIT Rourkee, PSG Tech Coimbatore and NPTEL course on Signal processing had included the book in their curriculum as a reference material or text book.

“The book had been sold out to most of the Asian countries. To be pace with advancing technologies, the proposed book on advanced wavelet theory will be multimedia based one with author’s presentation video and written material. The book will also have a website where readers can do online computational experiments,” the trio shared proudly.
