Finnish Cyber Security Expert Visits Amrita

Dr. Raimo Kantola, Professor of Networking TechnologyDepartment of Communications and NetworkingAalto University (Finland), visited the Amritapuri, Coimbatore, and Kochi campuses in early 2016. He gave a talk and interacted with students and faculty from the Departments of Cyber Security and Computer Science and Engineering (Amritapuri and Coimbatore). He also visited the Amrita Center for Nano Sciences and Molecular Medicine and the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center, Kochi. Dr. Kantola’s current research interests are new networking paradigms, network security, privacy and trust.

Dr. Kantola gave a talk on 5G Security Architecture which was primarily attended by post graduate students in the departments of Cyber Security and Computer Science and Engineering. In his talk, Dr. Kantola gave on overview of the challenges involved in achieving both the openness of the Internet and the Security of closed networks. This was followed by a subsequent interaction with the faculty of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The faculty members presented their areas of research and Dr. Kantola shared his current area of research as designing architecture for providing network solutions using cloud environment. He also visited the Amrita Cognizant Innovation Lab and Mobile & Wireless Networking Lab.

At the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Dr. Kantola met with faculty and students and heard about their various research interests and areas of focus. Dr. Kantola expressed interest in having a student exchange program and collaborating on projects. He was also was very enthusiastic about co-guiding PhD students.

Speaking on his experience at Amrita, Dr. Kantola said, “I was quiet impressed with Amrita’s strategy to work on societal projects. There is definite scope to collaborate with many departments at Aalto.”

Raimo Kantola holds an M.Sc. in computer science from St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University (1981) and Doctorate from Helsinki University of Technology (1995). He has 15 years of industry experience in digital switching system product development and architecture, product management, marketing, and research. Since 2005, he has served as a full professor of networking technology at Aalto University, Finland. He has held many positions of trust at the Helsinki University of Technology, now Aalto University, among them being the first Chairman of the Department of Communications and Networking.
