Abstract : Communication plays a vital role in connecting people. To establish an efficient communication between devices, there must be a strong, efficient and reliable infrastructure. If this infrastructure is not laid properly, then the communication shakes. Optical networks provide a huge service with the help of a promising infrastructure, where SONET/SDH plays an inevitable role. It is better to understand the working of optical networking, when learning the layered working. Hence a bird eye view of optical networking is articulated followed by its advantages and disadvantages. Then SONET/SDH is dealt with a deep look to get clutches with optical networking. © Research India Publications.
