Abstract : Now a days battery fed electric drives are commonly being used for electric vehicle applications, due to various advantages, such as: nearly zero emission, guaranteed load leveling, good transient operation and energy recovery during braking operation. To fulfill these requirements converters with bidirectional power flow capabilities are required to connect the accumulator (battery) to the dc link of the motor drive system. This paper proposes the usage of a high gain bidirectional DC-DC converter for automotive application. The converter employs coupled inductor with same winding turns in the primary and secondary sides [1]. In step up mode the windings of the coupled inductor are operated in parallel charge and series discharge to achieve high step up voltage gain. In step down mode, the windings are operated in series charge and parallel discharge to achieve high step down voltage gain. The bidirectional converter simulated in MATLAB Simulink and its effectiveness in interfacing battery with DC machine of the electric vehicle is analyzed.
