Abstract : The millimeter wave (mmWave) bands, a promising resource for 5G systems, suffer considerable attenuation over distance which can be mitigated by employing directional antennas with narrow beams. As 5G awaits standardization, it is vital to develop models that effectively describe the unique mmWave channels. In this paper, a custom ray tracing based directional deterministic mmWave outdoor channel model is presented. The bit error rate performance is analyzed and compared with those for both AWGN and independent and identically distributed (iid) Rayleigh fading channels. It is observed that the channel impacts differently for vertical and horizontal polarizations when the receiver is located at a closer distance from the transmitter, whereas the performance is comparable for large separation distances. This study is significantly important for effective system level simulations.
