Abstract : pThe adhesive bonded sheets are used as formed parts at different places in the aircraft and automobile bodies. The formability of adhesive bonded sheets is influenced mainly by ductility of the adhesive and interface bond. In this work, the influence of asphalt properties on formability of adhesive bonded dissimilar steel sheets is investigated. The bonding interface properties are varied by priming the surface with thin layer of asphalt. The stainless steel (SS202) and deep drawing quality (DDQ CR2) sheets were used as base materials. Tensile tests with and without asphalt priming is carried out to predict and compare the formability of adhesive bonded steel sheets. The results show that surface priming has improved the total elongation and formability of adhesive bonded steel sheets as compared to adhesive bonded sheets without asphalt priming. The surface priming has also improved strain hardening exponent and limit strain of base materials. This is due to increase in surface energy at the interface region with asphalt priming. The improved interface bonding enhances reduction in delamination during loading. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd./p
