Abstract : Railways are one of the most feasible and economic modes of transportation in our country. As the demand is increasing, it is difficult to provide power with good quality since the non-linear loads induce harmonics that are going to affect the power grid, power factor, etc. Non-linear loads that are used in the locomotives induce harmonics back into the line. As a result of this, the motor’s life and efficiency are affected. An Active and Passive filter can be integrated to form a Hybrid filter. And this filter along with synchronous (d-q) reference frame theory-based controller is the core area of this work. MATLAB computer simulation is used as a tool. Hybrid filter is used to cease harmonics and therefore simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK model so that the THD% is regulated under the guidelines of IEEE-519 standards.
