About

Smart Mobility and Automotive Research Technology Centre (SMART) is an engineering research lab mainly focusing on developing Intelligent Autonomous Vehicle related technologies and is headed by Prof. Rajesh Kannan Megalingam of department of Electronics and Communication. Our research focuses on designing and developing technologies for building Electric Autonomous Vehicles with advanced perception and decision-making capabilities which includes developing sophisticated deep learning, computer vision, and navigational algorithms. Our research extends to developing energy management systems, Vehicle-to-Grid(V2G) & Vehicle-to-Home (V2H ) technology, batteries, and Energy Storage systems, Connected Autonomous Vehicles technologies with Cyber Security.

Main areas of focus include but not limited to:

  • Development of power-efficient and cost-effective Autonomous Electric Vehicle which motivates the center to develop intelligent transport systems using AI-based solutions with 3D-Object detection and identification, Behavior prediction, Localization, Motion Planning, and Lane navigation
  • Research on batteries and energy storage systems in critical areas such as battery characterization, electrical and thermal control algorithms to improve the electric vehicle batteries’ efficiency, durability, charging speed, safety and cost.
  • Research on Motor design with high power density, powertrain optimization, and transmission system design for cost-effective electric vehicles
  • Research on Connected Autonomous Vehicles technologies such as Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I)
    Based Environment Perception, Dynamic Platooning with V2V Communication and Cyber security with development of security framework in vehicular networks.

Students trained (FLAME program by Mahindra Technical Academy)

The FLAME (Future Leaders in Automotive & Manufacturing Engineering) program is a student-centric technical and leadership initiative launched by the Mahindra Technical Academy (Mahindra & Mahindra) to bridge the gap between engineering academia and modern industry requirements.

International University Collaborations:

  • Collaborated with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on joint research journal papers, proposals and student projects focused on autonomous navigation in complex Indian road environments.
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kettering University, Flint, Michigan.
  • Collaborated with the University at Buffalo (UB) for the MEITY – NSF Joint Proposal Call
